    Conference-Related Notes

Since 2011, 13 different freshmen have captured Big Ten titles. Seven have wrestled for Penn State. They are David Taylor, Ed Ruth, Bo Nickal, Aaron Brooks, Levi Haines, and now Braeden Davis and Mitchell Mesenbrink.

The others are Silas Allred (‘23), Kollin Moore (‘17), Nathan Tomasello (‘15), Isaiah Martinez (‘15), Jason Tsirtsis (‘14), and Logan Stieber (‘12). The last time there were two from the same school, in the same year, was Taylor/Ruth in 2011.

Some notes on your notes -

    • Alabama has had 3 qualifiers before in 1955, 1976, 1978, 1979. But after Alabama and Auburn shut down their program the state suffered too.
    • Long Island had a qualifier way back in 1970 in John Direnzo. But they were DII at the time.
    • Army has never had more than 1 freshman ever. They've had 13 since 1980
    • Wisconsin has never had the top 2 seeds at a weight until this year.
    • Top-2 seeds at the same weight as freshman has only happened 2x.
    • Idaho has only had 3 #1 seeds. The other is Kirk Smith.
    • Escobedo is the only Indiana native to have the #1 seed 2x.
    • The only Purdue wrestler to have 3 top 4 seeds is Bob Marshall from 1960-1962
