The announcement marks the second time Russo has won the accolade, as he also received the honor on Feb. 8, 2009.
Russo, who is listed as the ninth-best heavyweight in the country, helped the Scarlet Knights (16-4-1) extend the squad’s unbeaten streak to a school-record 12 by capturing wins in the team’s upset against No. 23 Virginia, 25-12, last Friday night and Navy, 23-10, Saturday night.
Against Virginia, Russo capped off the exciting victory with a 7-3 decision over Jack Danilkkowicz. Russo picked up one of the biggest wins of his career last Saturday by outlasting No. 6 Scott Steele of Navy by a 7-6 score.
Russo leads Rutgers with 25 victories, against only four losses, and has won 18 of his 19 dual bouts. The RU heavyweight is currently on a 11-match win streak and leads the conference with 15 pin fall victories. Russo’s pin total ranks 12th in the country.
Rutgers and the rest of the Scarlet Knights travel to Bethlehem, Pa. to face EIWA foe and seventh-ranked Lehigh on Saturday at 1 p.m.
