The Quakers won 15 of the 19 bouts contested in the dual meets, and never trailed in either. The overall takedown score in the two meets was 67-17 in favor of the Quakers, including a 39-7 advantage against Sacred Heart.
Six different Quakers - May Bethea, Ray Bethea, C.J. Cobb, Patrik Garren, Caleb Richardson and Lorenzo Thomas - went 2-0 on the day.
Against Army West Point, the biggest win for the Quakers was a controversial one. May Bethea defeated No. 14 Russell Parsons, 2-1, in sudden victory. Neither man scored a takedown in the match, but a second stalling warning on Parsons in overtime was the difference.
Penn won both matches which reached overtime. Sophomore Marc Mastropietro knocked off Logan Everett, 8-5, in tiebreakers. After Mastropietro put together a good ride in the first period of the tiebreaker, Everett elected to go neutral and conceded an escape. Mastropietro quickly scored a takedown to seize control of the match.
The Quakers suffered a tough loss at 174 when veteran Brian Harvey knocked off No. 15 Casey Kent, 10-7. Kent scored first, but a reversal and two quick back points in the first period gave Harvey the lead. In the second, Kent looked to get to work on top, but the official called for injury time after a Kent mat return. The only problem was that Harvey had never called for time. Off the ensuing restart, Harvey added a second reversal and then a takedown before the second period ended. In the third, Kent scored a takedown but ran out of time for the comeback.
Caleb Richardson had six takedowns en route to a 14-5 major decision at 133, and No. 11 C.J. Cobb went one better with seven scores for a 16-5 major. No. 11 Lorenzo Thomas connected for five takedowns in a 13-5 major decision at 184 pounds.
In the first dual of the day, the host Pioneers were thinking upset with the meet tied, 6-6, after four matches. The Quakers quickly halted those thoughts with wins in the final six matches - including five victories with bonus points.
No. 11 C.J. Cobb and No. 15 Casey Kent each recorded technical falls to help the onslaught. Cobb connected on eight takedowns and added four points of nearfall en route to a 22-6 win at 149 pounds. For Kent, it was another dominant first period - he scored a takedown six seconds in and added two sets of four-point nearfall in the opening period. He would then add two takedowns and a final set of nearfall for an 18-2 win at 4:31.
Ray Bethea finished on seven takedowns in a 16-5 major decision at 165 pounds, including four takedowns in the third period to blow open a 6-2 bout. More impressively, Bethea racked up 5:09 of riding time in the win.
No. 11 Lorenzo Thomas controlled the first period in his match, scoring three takedowns and adding four points of nearfall for a 10-1 lead after the first frame. He would go on to win, 17-4.
At 197, Joe Heyob bumped up from his usual spot at 184, and controlled the majority of the match for an 18-9 major decision. He finished five takedown in the match, and was close to the fall with a six-point move off a cradle in the second period, before tiring a bit in the final half minute.
Other winners in the dual with Sacred Heart for Penn were Patrik Garren (285) and Caleb Richardson (133). Garren started the dual off with a 9-3 decision on the strength of a solid first period which featured two takedowns. Richardson only eked out a 7-6 decision after he was caught on a roll attempt in the second period for four points of nearfall. Otherwise, he was in control of the bout - he lead 6-1 after the first with two takedowns and two points of nearfall.
Jeremy Schwartz went back and forth with Gerard Daly at 125, coming up on the wrong end of an 11-6 decision. The bout was 5-4, Daly, after two periods and a late flurry in the third was the difference. At 141, A.J. Vindici conceded a takedown in the first period, and that was the only scoring in his loss to Alex Harnsberger.
The Quakers return home on January 24, hosting Binghamton at 1 p.m.
