    Edinboro takes down Lock Haven

    LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- A.J. Schopp and Vince Pickett recorded falls to lead Edinboro to a 37-3 win at Lock Haven on Saturday night in an Eastern Wrestling League match. It marked the 12th straight win for the Fighting Scots over the Bald Eagles. The victory boosted the Fighting Scots to 5-3 overall and 3-0 in the EWL, while Lock Haven is now 2-8 and 0-3, respectively.

    All told, the Fighting Scots picked up bonus points in five matches, with Dave Habat winning by technical fall and Kasey Burnett-Davis and Ernest James picking up major decisions.

    Kory Mines got the match underway with a 4-2 decision over Kaleb LeMaire at 125 lbs. The redshirt junior had the lone takedown of the match just 30 seconds in. LeMaire would knot the match at 2-2 with escapes in the first and second periods, but Mines would add an escape points in the third period and had 1:14 in riding time. Ranked 17th by Amateur Wrestling News, he improved to 16-6 with the victory.

    Schopp, ranked second at 133 lbs., moved a step closer to the career pins record with the fall over Cody Wheeler at 4:39 as he posted his 12th fall of the season and 49th of his career. He is now just four pins shy of Deonte Penn's record of 53 falls. Schopp held a healthy 13-0 lead when the end came, boosting his record to 22-1.

    Top-ranked Mitchell Port faced a stern challenge from Lock Haven's Dan Neff at 141 lbs. Port remained undefeated at 18-0 with a 4-1 decision over Neff, who fell to 21-7. Following a scoreless first period, Ports gained a 1-0 lead with a second period escape. With 15 seconds left in the period he made it 3-0 with a takedown. Neff picked up an escape point with 48 seconds remaining in the third period, but Port owned 1:12 in riding time for the win.

    Dave Habat boosted Edinboro's lead to 17-0 with an 18-3 technical fall at 7:00 over Mac Maldarelli at 149 lbs. Ranked 16th by InterMat and 18th by Amateur Wrestling News, Habat moved to 19-4 with the victory. He would lead 5-0 after one thanks to a takedown and three near fall points, and boosted the lead to 8-1 after two periods with an escape and takedown. In the third, Habat added three takedowns and three back points.

    Johnny Greisheimer, ranked 16th by Amateur Wrestling News and 17th by InterMat, posted his seventh win in his last eight bouts with an 8-2 decision over Billy Randt at 157 lbs. He finished with three takedowns while improving to 17-7.

    Kasey Burnett-Davis returned to the lineup at 165 lbs. and gave Edinboro a 24-0 win with a 10-2 major decision over Elias Biddle. The redshirt junior improved to 9-5 after trailing 1-0 early in the second period. A takedown and two near fall points made it 4-1 after two periods. He would add a similar combination in the third period.

    Lock Haven picked up its lone win in the evening at 174 lbs., as Dylan Caprio won a 3-2 decision over Patrick Jennings (7-8). Jennings used a second period reversal to grab a 2-0 lead, but Caprio would escape, then in the third period he used his own reversal for the winning points.

    Vic Avery, who has battled an ankle injury throughout the year, returned at 184 lbs. after missing last weekend's Virginia Duals. He faced a formidable opponent in Fred Garcia, who came in at 19-5. Avery, ranked 13th by Amateur Wrestling News and 15th by InterMat, registered a quick takedown in the match. It would prove to be the only one. Garcia's escape made it 2-1 after one, and he tied the with a quick escape to start the second. Starting down to begin the third period, Avery would escape 30 seconds in for the winning points. The redshirt sophomore is now 8-2.

    Pickett had a rough weekend at the Virginia Duals, losing all three of his matches. He boosted his record to 11-8 with his third fall, the end coming at 5:49 in his match against Jeff Pickel at 197 lbs. He led 11-0 when he finished the match.

    Ernest James, ranked 17th by Amateur Wrestling News and 19th by InterMat, finished off the big night with an 11-09 major decision over Cody Mason at heavyweight. The redshirt senior is now 18-5 after three takedowns and also picking up three near fall points late in the match.

    Edinboro will take to the mats for a pair of EWL matches next weekend. The Fighting Scots wrestle at Cleveland State on Friday, January 24, then the next day host Bloomsburg at 7 p.m.
