Edinboro has a quick turnaround, competing on Saturday in the NWCA National Duals Championship Series. The Fighting Scots host Iowa at McComb Fieldhouse at 7 p.m.
Sean Russell got the night off to a fast start with a fall over Devin Brown at 125 lbs. Russell, ranked ninth by InterMat, jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the second period with five takedowns before tilting Brown for his third fall of the season and 19th bonus-point win. Russell improved to 29-5 with his tenth straight win.
Korbin Myers, ranked 19th at 133 lbs., made it 9-0 with a 5-4 decision over Cory Stainbrook. Myers trailed 4-2 after two periods following a reversal and two back points for Stainbrook in the final seconds of the period. Myers, now 27-9, used a reversal in the third period to tie the match at 4-4, and won riding time.
West Virginia picked up its first win of the night as Tim Wheeling won a 4-1 decision over Nate Hagan (14-12) at 141 lbs. Edinboro won the next two bouts to build the lead to 15-3.
At 149 lbs., Patricio Lugo won a 12-6 decision over Christian Monserrat. Ranked 11th, Lugo won on the strength of three takedowns, and had a third-period reversal. The sophomore improved to 26-7. Chase Delande followed an 11-4 decision over Dayton Garrett at 157 lbs. The lone senior in Edinboro's lineup, Delande used a big second period to improve to 19-14. The match was tied at 2-2 after one period, but Delande built the margin to 10-2 with a takedown, two near-fall points, then four more.
The feature match of the night went to West Virginia's 11th-ranked Dylan Cottrell at 165 lbs. Cottrell won a 9-3 decision over 13th-ranked Austin Matthews, as Matthews fell to 15-6.
Ty Schoffstall continued his impressive run of late with a 22-7 technical fall at 5:48 in his 174 lb. match with Ty Millward. Schoffstall has won six of his last seven matches to improve to 17-8. The redshirt junior had eight takedowns, plus a reversal and tilted Millward twice for four points.
Dakota Geer, ranked 17th at 184 lbs., used a first period takedown and a third period reversal for a 5-1 decision over Parker VonEgidy. The freshman is now 26-7.
West Virginia picked up their third win of the night as fifth-ranked Jacob A. Smith claimed a 17-5 major decision over Dylan Reynolds (12-16). Billy Miller wrapped up the win for the Fighting Scots with a 14-2 major decision over Brandon Ngati at heavyweight. Following a scoreless first period, Miller dominated match from the top position. While improving to 27-9, he led 3-1 after two periods following an escape and takedown. In the third period, Miller had a takedown in between two four-point nearfall moves.
