Edinboro clinches EWL regular season title

EDINBORO, Pa. -- Edinboro clinched the Eastern Wrestling League regular season crown on Saturday night with a 29-10 victory over Bloomsburg at McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots wrapped up EWL competition with a perfect 5-0 record while winning for the second straight night, and improved to 7-3 overall. Bloomsburg is now 5-6 overall and 1-2 in EWL action.

The Fighting Scots followed their usual pattern of jumping out to a big lead, as they won the first five matches, four by bonus points. That gave them a 23-0 lead. Bloomsburg would follow with a pair of decisions at 165 and 174 lbs. to close the gap to 23-6, but Edinboro would win two of the final three matches.

Ernest James capped the evening with his first win in four tries against Bloomsburg's Justin Grant. James came in ranked 16th by Amateur Wrestling News and 19th by InterMat, while Grant was ranked 14th by Amateur Wrestling News. James would prevail with a 2-1 decision, the same score that Grant beat James by in the PSAC finals in December.

Following a scoreless first period, James rode out Grant in the second period just 25 seconds remained. The fifth-year senior then registered his own escape at 1:38 to knot the score at 1-1. He would win thanks to the 1:13 in riding time. James is now 20-5 while Grant fell to 22-5.

The night got underway with a 4-0 decision by Kory Mines, ranked 16th by Amateur Wrestling News and 19th by InterMat, over Sean Boylan at 125 lbs. Mines took a 1-0 lead with a quick escape in the second period, then picked up two near fall points at 1:`10 of the third period, along with owning a 1:57 advantage in riding time. He improved to 18-6.

A.J. Schopp followed with a 16-0 technical fall over Nick Wilcox (18-9) at 133 lbs. as the two continued their long rivalry. Ranked second, Schopp led just 2-0 after one period, but he built the margin to 7-0 after two periods with two tilts. He registered his second takedown of the bout just over thirty seconds into the third period, and would tilt Wilcox two more times for a total of six points. Schopp is now 24-1 and boosted his career ledger to 96-12.

Top-ranked Mitchell Port made it 14-0 with the only fall of the evening. He boosted his record to 20-0 with the pin of Elliot Zackoski at 3:54. He had three takedowns in the first period alone with a reversal early in the second period ultimately leading to the fall.

After taking last night off against Cleveland State, Dave Habat turned in a strong showing at 149 lbs., winning by technical fall over Derek Goodwin, 18-2 at 4:26. Habit held a 9-2 lead after one period courtesy of three takedowns and three back points. He would add an escape and takedown, followed by a pair of three near fall tilts to end the match. Ranked 16th by InterMat and 17th by Amateur Wrestling News, Habat is now 20-4.

Johnny Greisheimer found himself trailing 6-2 after less than two minutes in his 157 lb. match with Kevin Hartnett, as Hartnett took the Boro senior down three times. Greishimer, ranked 16th by Amateur Wrestling News and 17th by InterMat, responded with an escape and a takedown with eight second left in the period to close to within 6-5. He scored the lone points of the second period with an escape and takedown for an 8-6 advantage, then used a big third period to claim a 17-6 major decision. He opened the third period with a takedown, then twice tilted Hartnett for six points. He improved to 19-7 while boosting Edinboro's lead to 23-0.

Bloomsburg would claim decisions in the next two bouts to make it 23-6. Kasey Burnett-Davis put up a game fight against 15th-ranked Josh Veltre (15-3) at 165 lbs., but ultimately fell to 10-6 after a 7-3 decision for Veltre.

The same held true for Patrick Jennings at 174 lbs. Mike Dessino (22-6) used a reversal thirty seconds into the third period for a 2-0 decision over Jennings, who fell to 8-9.

Vic Avery assured Edinboro the win with a 7-4 decision over Sam Shirey at 184 lbs. Shirey led 2-1 after one period, but Avery answered with an escape and takedown in the second period for a 4-2 lead. Shirey closed to 4-3 with an escape to start the third, but Avery's second takedown with 1:13 left gave him a 6-3 cushion. Shirey's escape was balanced by a 1:01 riding time advantage for Avery. Ranked 14th by Amateur Wrestling News and 15th by InterMat, Avery is now 14-2.

Bloomsburg's Richard Perry, ranked fourth by Amateur Wrestling News and fifth by InterMat, picked up his 100th career victory at 197 lbs. with a 12-4 major decision over Vince Pickett (12-9).
