Eastern Michigan defeats Eastern Illinois, Duquesne, and Olivet

Eastern Michigan dominated the wrestling Saturday as the Eagles won all of three of their meets at Bowen Field House. EMU defeated Eastern Illinois 33-19 in the opener and came back later to beat Duquesne 37-9 and then Olivet College 21-9. The Eagles were led by senior Captain Chad Roush (157/165), junior Ahmed Joumaa (141/149), and sophomore Tony Lyssiotis (197), who all had 3-0 records for the day.

Against Eastern Illinois, EMU jumped out to a quick 12-0 lead when Phillip Plowman pinned Tony Metzger at 133, following a forfeit win by Sean Clair at 125. After the Panthers got on the board at 141, the Eagles responded with three exciting victories. At 149, Ahmed Joumaa came back from an early deficit and pinned Jeff Tharp at 4:31. Freshman Quinn Guernsey took EIU's Chris Smith into overtime and the tie-breaker to win 6-5. Senior Chad Roush then pinned Andy Mangiaguerra in the less than a minute and a half of their match to give EMU an insurmountable 27-3 lead.

Eastern dominated Duquesne, winning 8 of the 10 matches en route to a 37-9 victory. The visiting Dukes from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania won two matches in the meddle of the meet at 165 and 174 but the Eagles took all of the rest. At 125, freshman Sean Clair finished his perfect 2-0 day with a second period pin of Jonathan Bittinger. Phillip Plowman also had a 2-0 day with a 9-2 victory over Keith Pavlekovsky at 133. Ahmed Joumaa shut out Brad Cipriani 4-0 at 141. At 149, junior Nick Conklin defeated Dan Pauley 8-1. Captain Chad Roush then completed the string of five Eagles victories with a 10-0 major decision over Cody Midlam to stake Eastern to a 19-0 lead in the meet. After the two losses, redshirt freshman John McClure scored a big throw for a fall in the first period of his match against Mike Buczkowski. That started a string of three straight first period pins for Eastern. At 197 Tony Lyssiotis pinned Tim Frank in 2:08. Freshman Jake Wood then stuck Joe D'Orsie at 1:55 of their heavyweight match to end the rout.

The closest match of the day for Eastern came against Division III Olivet (MI) College. The Comets are ranked 11th in the nation in Division III and had earlier in the day knocked off Duquesne by a 22-15 margin. Eastern however won 7 of the 10 matches and posted a 21-9 win for their third victory of the day. No bonus points were scored in any of the matches but the Eagles won the first six bouts. The premiere match up came at 149 where EMU's sophomore Jermaine Thompson, recently ranked 20th in Division I, faced Olivet's Jason Brew, who is currently ranked 6th in the nation in Division III. Thompson had been held out of the earlier matches with an injury but scored three big takedowns on his way to a convincing 8-4 decision over Brew. Earlier redshirt freshman Zach Beck got into the lineup at 125 and defeated Kyle Labrecque 6-5.

Freshman Chris Jenkins stepped in at 133 and knocked off Kefentse Mandisi 8-3. At 141, Ahmed Joumaa completed his perfect day with a 5-2 victory over Rob Yahrmarkt. Quinn Guernsey got his second win of the day when he edged Mike Daubenmeyer 6-5. Senior captain Chad Roush then completed the string of EMU victories with a 2-1 win at 157 to give the Eagles an 18-0 lead in the meet. Tony Lyssiotis finished out the Eastern scoring with a 5-1 win over Aaron Stewart at 197 pounds.
