Six Blue Devils went undefeated on the day as bonus points were abound for Duke in the two duals. Thayer Atkins, at 125, registered a major decision and technical fall to finish the day with nine points, while Jacob Kasper pinned both of his foes to continue his stellar 2017. Zach Finesilver (141), Cole Baumgartner (133), Connor Bass (174) and Alec Schenk (184) also went unbeaten as they combined for 40 points in the two bouts.
Also highlighting the day for Duke was the first action in a Duke single for a pair of Blue Devils this season. Jake Faust made his debut at 157 pounds, dominating Hofstra's Jake Kaminsky 17-1 for his first win. Sophomore Luke Farinaro made his debut at 197 pounds, earning a victory over LIU Post after a narrow 5-4 setback to start the day against the Pride.
The Blue Devils raced out to a 13-0 lead against Hofstra, getting a technical fall and pin from Atkins and Baumgartner, respectively. The Pride got on the scoreboard with a major decision at 149, but Faust responded with his technical fall to make it 18-4 at the halfway point of the match.
Bass, ranked 15th at 174 pounds, turned in a solid showing with a 9-4 decision, while Schenk and Kasper rounded out Duke's lineup against Hofstra with a 10-2 major decision and a second-period pin, respectively. The win was Kasper's 17th and his fifth fall.
The second match of the day for the Blue Devils followed a similar path as Duke jumped out to a 17-0 victory. Atkins, Finesilver and Xaviel Ramos all scored bonus points, while Baumgartner had the thriller of the day with overtime 4-2 decision. The senior battled through seven minutes against Anthony Sparacio and quickly got to his offense in overtime to improve to 13-6 overall on the year and 3-1 in duals.
After the Pioneers garnered victories at 157 and 165, the Blue Devils finished the day with four straight bonus point victories. Kasper got his sixth fall of the year, again in the second period, and Bass and Schenk completed their days with consecutive technical falls.
Duke opens ACC dual action Wednesday, Jan. 11 at No. 10 NC State. The Blue Devils are 2-2 in the previous four matches against the Wolfpack. Duke returns home Jan. 17 against No. 21 Appalachian State, marking Duke's fourth ranked opponent this season.
