Delaware Valley defeats Wilkes University, 31-12

DOYLESTOWN (PA) -- In a battle of nationally-ranked teams and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) rivals, No. 28 Delaware Valley College dominated the middle weight classes and won six of the final seven matches for a 31-12 home victory over No. 21 Wilkes University.

The Aggies improved to 4-5 on the season as they head to tomorrow's East Coast Duals at Division II Shippensburg University. The Colonels saw their 10-match winning streak come to an end as the fell to 10-2.

Wilkes held a 9-3 advantage after the first three bouts, but the Aggies won four straight, including three with bonus points, to take a commanding, 22-9 lead. The run began at 149 pounds as Jaryd Steinbacher (5-9) registered four takedowns, en route to a 10-3 decision over Mike Sciulara (2-7).

A wild match took place at 157 as Delaware Valley's Ryan Herwig and Wilkes' Andrew Franko registered 16 points, including a pair of near-falls in the first period alone. Herwig (11-9) held a 9-7 advantage and then pinned Franko (3-2) just 12 seconds into the second period to give the Aggies the lead for good at 12-9.

At 165, John Powell (13-7) raced out to a 7-0 lead over Wilkes' D.J. Giancola (6-12). He was still up 10-5 when he notched a takedown with 14 seconds to go and had enough riding time for the extra point, a 13-5 major decision and a 16-9 Delaware Valley advantage.

Ryan Pope took a 3-2 lead with a takedown over Angelo Dileo with 1:12 remaining in the first period of their 174-pound bout. However, Dileo was injured on the move and could not continue. Delaware Valley was awarded the six-point injury default and Pope evened his record at 7-7.

Wilkes ended the run and stayed in the contest at 22-12 as 184-pounder Rex Harris (26-3) notched the only takedown in the match with 1:30 remaining for a 3-2 triumph over Mike Berlanda (11-6).

However, Delaware Valley clinched the match at 197 as 2005 national runner-up and current second-ranked Jamall Johnson (11-4) took a 4-0 lead and held on for a 5-4 victory over Brandon Kelly (15-3). Kevin Orr (15-4) then ended the match in style as he pinned Keith Altiery (10-13) with 15 seconds left in the first period for his eighth fall of the year.

The math began at 125 pounds where Wilkes' Felipe Quieroz (18-5) held a 5-3 lead late in the third period against Josh Proctor (2-3). It appeared that Proctor was going to get a takedown to tie the match, but instead Quieroz got the takedown and then the pin with 16 seconds remaining for a 6-0 Colonel lead.

At 133, Justin Shorts (7-12) raced out to a 5-1 lead for Delaware Valley and held on for a 5-4 victory over Shaun Farnham (10-10). The Colonels' Adam Penberthy (22-9) followed with a 10-3 decision over two-time MAC champion and national qualifier Dan Hall (8-8) at 141 pounds for a 9-3 Wilkes lead. However, it was all Aggies after that for their fourth straight win over the Colonels.
