Dana defeats Augustana, 20-17, in battle of the Vikings

Dana jumped out to a 10-0 lead after two matches and then hung on to edge Augustana 20-17 wrestling victory in a battle of the Vikings Friday night at the Elmen Center.

Dana, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA national rankings, improved to 15-1-1, while Augustana, ranked fifth in NCAA Division II, fell to 9-4.

Burke Barnes and Jimmy Rollins got Dana off to the good start. Barnes scored a 20-10 major decision over Chris Trampe and Rollins, ranked No. 2 in NAIA, pinned Mike Long in 4:18 to stake the visitors to a 10-0 lead.

Augustana then turned to seniors Andre VanderVelde and Ryan King and both delivered key wins. VanderVelde, ranked No. 6 in Division II, trailed No. 7 Terrence Almond 2-1 after one period, but then turned up the heat in the final two periods to record a 26-11 technical fall. With Almond fatigued, VanderVelde scored a series of takedowns to build his lead.

King, ranked No. 2 at 149 pounds, kept Augie close with a dramatic 7-5 overtime win over No. 6 Anthony Haukenberry, the defending NAIA national champion. The score was tied 5-5 at the end of regulation. In overtime, the two wrestlers locked up in a spot where either wrestler could score the winning takedown. Eventually, King got the takedown with 30 seconds left on the clock to pick up his 98th career victory and draw Augie to within 2 points at 10-8.

Danas Scott Taylor then edged Augies Aaron Haddorff 11-6 at 157 pounds before Cody Henriksen downed Ben Henderson 9-5 at 165 pounds to make the score 13-11. Henderson is ranked No. 3 in the nation at 157 pounds, but moved up a weight class.

Dana pushed the lead to 20-11 following wins by Marshall Marquardt and Willie Parks. Marquardt, ranked third at 174 pounds, edged No. 5 Dusty Wilking 4-1, while Willie Parks, ranked No. 1 at 184 pounds, scored a 16-7 major decision over No. 4 Nate Buys.

Augustana won the final two matches by decision. Tim Boldt, the top-ranked wrestler at 197 pounds, decisioned No. 4 Blair Alderman 13-8 to make the score 20-14 in favor of Dana. Needing a pin to forge a tie, heavyweight Cris Bietz earned a 5-0 decision over Wade Jordan in a defensive match.

Augustana will be in action next Wednesday, February 8, when the Vikings travel to No. 12 Minnesota State-Moorhead.
