CSU Bakersfield uses 4 pins to defeat Boise State 34-12

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Behind four pins and a major decision, No. 25 CSU Bakersfield defeated Boise State 34-12 (3-7, 1-2 Pac-12) in Pac-12 dual action Friday night. With the victory, CSUB improved to 4-0 in the Pac-12 for the first time since the 2008-09 season.

No. 8 Reuben Franklin started the Roadrunners off strong as he pinned Kadyn Del Toro at the 4:20 mark of the opening 197-pound bout. Franklin improved to 28-5 on the year, earning his seventh pin of the season.

After a scoreless first period at heavyweight Matt Williams was given the top position by Gabriel Gonzalez to start the second. Williams took advantage and after a reversal, Williams earned his team leading eighth pin of the year against Gonzalez with 31 seconds remaining in the period.

Sergio Mendez put CSUB up 15-0 with a 7-4 decision over Rami Haddadin at 125 pounds. Boise State got on the board at 133 when Carson Kuhn pinned Carlos Herrera with 33 seconds to go in the second period. Ian Nickell earned a major decision and four team points for the Roadrunners when he posted a four-point near fall at the buzzer against Jake Velarde. CSUB took a 19-6 lead into intermission.

Out of the break, the Broncos' (3-7, 1-2 Pac-12) Geo Martinez, ranked 15th in the current Intermat poll at 149 pounds, faced Coleman Hammond. Martinez defeated Hammond by a 6-3 count. Chris Castillo closed the gap for the Broncos with a 3-2 victory against AJ Fierro at 157.

Adam Fierro recorded a hard fought 8-5 victory over Taylor West in the 165-pound match. No. 7 Bryce Hammond clinched the dual for the Roadrunners when he pinned Austin Dewey 1:59 into the 174-pound bout. Dylan Bollinger wrapped up the night with his fifth pin of the season when he stuck Zach Coffman at 3:40 of the 184-pound match.

“We wrestled great tonight,” said CSUB head coach Mike Mendoza. “The bonus points from the pins was great to see. “We are definitely going in the right direction. There is another level that this team is capable of hitting.”

The 11 dual victories this season for CSUB (11-3) are the most for the program since the 2004-05 campaign when the Roadrunners went 13-7. CSUB concludes the regular season Sunday afternoon when CSUB hosts Arizona State (10-7, 1-2 Pac-12) at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at Vallitix.com.
