The dual began at 149 pounds where the Bears' Ben Polkowske defeated Everett Pratt 11-9. Jacob Thalin got the ‘Runners on the board with a 7-3 decision against Jimmy Fate. The 165-pound bout featured a pair of nationally ranked wrestlers. UNC's Keilan Torres jumped out to a 6-0 lead on Lorenzo De La Riva. De La Riva battled back and took an 8-6 advantage of two periods. The third period was a battle. With the score tied at 10-10, De La Riva's escape with four seconds remaining gave CSUB its first lead of the night.
“We knew that Torres was tought,†said CSUB head coach Manny Rivera. “Lorenzo kept putting the pressure on him and making him work in different positions.â€
Tanner Davis returned the advantage to Northern Colorado at 174 when he defeated Matt Penyacsek 9-5. Dylan Gabel's tech fall over true freshman, Noe Garcia in the 184-pound match pushed the Bears' lead to 12-6. CSUB sent another true freshman out at 197 where Jacob Sieder recorded his first dual victory, 7-2, against Jamarcus Grant.
Sean Nickell met Trey Andrews at 125 pounds for the second time this season. Nickell avenged a pin fall loss to Andrews that occurred at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational with a 13-3 major decision. Andrews entered the match ranked 20th at 125 by the Amateur Wrestling News.
UNC's Rico Montoya closed the gap for the Bears with a 9-3 victory over Carlos Herrera at 133 pounds. The final match of the night pitted CSUB's Russell Rohlfing against former Roadrunner Timmy Box. Box and Rohlfing wrestled to a 6-6 tie after three minutes. Rohlfing began to pull away in the second with a two-point escape and a two-point near fall. Rohlfing continue to stay on offense, pulling away to 20-11 major, giving the Roadrunners the victory.
“That was probably the best we have wrestled in the last couple of weeks,†Rivera said. “Jacob Sieder came up huge for us at 197. We wrestled the way we should have at the other weights.â€
CSUB was once again without the services of 149-pounder Coleman Hammond and 197-pounder Matt Williams who sat out with injuries. As a result, the Roadrunners started the two seniors on the roster in Encarnarcion-Strand and Pratt, two sophomores (Nickell and Herrera), and six redshirt or true freshmen.
The Roadrunners (5-5, 1-2 Pac-12) travel to No. 21/22 Arizona State (7-4, 0-1 Pac-12) Thursday for a 7 p.m. (MT) start. The dual will be televised by Pac-12 Arizona (Spectrum Channel 141/1141 in Bakersfield) as well begin streamed on Pac-12.com.
