"I liked the way we competed today," said Head Coach Manny Rivera. "It was an unusual day and I wish we would have had a full slate of opportunities for evaluation, but the guys we sent to the mat were focused and determined."
Duke forfeited bouts at 125, 141, 149 and 165 pounds spotting the Roadrunners a quick 24 points. CSUB added 17 more points when it took five of the six contested duals versus the Blue Devils.
Kalani Tonge got the `Runners off to a fast start picking up a 10-5 decision over Duke's Eric Carter at 157 lbs. In his first dual match-up of the season, Tonge steadily pulled away from Carter winning each period of his bout before adding the riding time point to his final margin. Tonge was a last-minute insertion into the line-up and improves to 9-1 on the season with today's win.
Josh Annis was another late substitution into the `Runner starting line-up. After wrestling all season at 174 lbs, Annis slotted up a weight class and defeated Duke's Kai Blake, 7-0. Annis took each period by identical 2-0 scores and easily handled his heavier opponent to add the ride time point.
"We always know we'll always get maximum effort from Josh," Rivera said. "He's confident and he makes zero excuses. I'm not at all surprised he was able to handle what we asked of him today."
Snyder took immediate control of his match, taking Blue Devil Jonah Niesenbaum to the mat less than 30 seconds into their bout. He increased his margin in the second period posting an escape and an immediate takedown before Niesenbaum was hit with his second stall warning. Snyder closed out the match with a 5-1 third period, picking up his second win by major decision on the year by a 12-1 margin.
"Jarrod put together a complete match," Rivera added. "He competed from start to finish, was excellent on top and on the bottom and he was great offensively and defensively."
Ducharme added a major decision victory of his own when he defeated Vincent Baker, 13-5. After a tight first period, Ducharme blew the match open in the second period when he outscored his Duke opponent by a 4-1 margin. All told, the junior posted four take downs and one reversal in his four-point win.
Chance Rich added CSUB's sixth victory of the day when he outlasted Harrison Campbell in a narrow, back-and-forth bout by a 6-5 score.
Duke picked up its lone win of the day when #30 Mason Eaglin knocked off Albert Urias, 8-0. Urias hung tight with the ranked Blue Devil, trailing just 2-0 heading into the bout's final period. A quick Eaglin escape led to a subsequent takedown and a pair of back points to set the final margin.
Jacob Thalin, Alex Hernandez-Figueroa, Angelo Martinoni and Russell Rohlfing each picked up forfeited victories for the `Runners. Thalin's win was his 10th of the season and the 50th of his career, while Rohlfing earned his 76th win as a Roadrunner to move into a tie for 39th all-time in CSUB history.
Bakersfield returns to action next weekend when they travel for road matches at Wyoming and Northern Colorado. The `Runners dropped home matches to both opponents last season, losing to the Cowboys 25-6 and dropping a close-knit affair with the Bears, 17-16.
