Cornell tops Columbia for 71st straight conference win

ITHACA, N.Y. -- With a match against No. 4 Oklahoma State looming on Sunday, the Cornell wrestling team made sure it wasn't looking ahead and took care of business to remain atop the Ivy League standings, winning its 71st consecutive conference match with a 23-15 triumph over Columbia on Saturday afternoon at the Friedman Wrestling Center. The Big Red improved to 4-4 on the year, while the Lions fell to 8-5 (1-2 Ivy). Cornell forfeited at 125 and used four backups in the lineup, but a late rally by Owen Scott at 197 sealed the win for the Big Red.

The teams traded forfeits, with Cornell surrendering six points at 125 and Columbia giving them back at 141, meaning the only match contestedi n the first three weights was top-ranked Nahshon Garrett's 18-3 technical fall win over 2014 first-team All-Ivy selection Angelo Amenta at 133. Cornell never trailed in the fual after Mark Grey had his hand raised at 141, as senior Logan David earned a win on Senior Weekend with a 4-3 triumph over Danny Reed at 149 to build the team lead to 14-6.

Duke Pickett and Brian Realbuto were dominant in decision wins at 165 and 174 over strong Lion opponents, and Scott wrapped up the win by overcoming a 3-0 deficit thanks to a reversal, an escape, a third period takedown and a stalling call to earn the 6-3 victory.

Garrett had his hand raised for the 137th time in a Cornell singlet, matching four-time NCAA champion Kyle Dake for fourth on the school's all-time list. It was also his 84th victory with bonus points attached, matching two-time NCAA champ Travis Lee for third on Cornell's career list. He improved him win streak to 26 and ran his record to 25-0.

The Big Red sat starters Dalton Macri (125), Joey Galasso (149), Dylan Palacio (157), Gabe Dean (184) and Jeramy Sweaney (285) for reasons from illness to giving a senior a last shot at competing in a home dual. David took advantage of his final opportunity at home with the win over Reed, defending the Columbia wrestler to the final whistle to avoid a takedown that would have put him behind on the final scorecard.

Columbia earned wins at 125 for Britain Carter (forfeit), 157 behind Markus Scheider, 184 with Mike Fetchet and 285 with Garrett Ryan, all coming by decision against Cornell reserves.
