Cornell clinches share of Ivy League title with victory over Harvard

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Steve Anceravage recorded the only pin of the evening as the No. 14 Big Red wrestling team clinched a share of the Ivy League title Friday night with a 28-9 victory over Harvard at Friedman Wrestling Center. Cornell, with eyes on the outright championship, is now a perfect 4-0 in league competition and 8-4 overall. Harvard drops to 4-8-1 overall and 1-2-1 in Ivy League matches.

The contest got underway at the 184-pound weight class, which Joe Mazzurco mans for the Big Red. Though points were tough to accumulate for both Mazzurco and opponent Louis Caputo, the Cornell grappler was able to use a third period escape to secure a 3-2 victory and give the Big Red the first three team points of the night. Jerry Rinaldi was up next for Cornell at 197 pounds against Harvard's Billy Colgan. Rinaldi came very close to pinning Colgan's shoulders to the mat as time was running out in the second period. The five points earned for the near fall, however, were all he would need in an 11-0 major decision.

Harvard's Bode Ogunwole swung the momentum back in the favor of the Crimson with an impressive 12-5 win over Matt Pollock that cut the deficit to 7-3. Cornell, though, was able to pad their cushion at 125 pounds, a weight at which Harvard did not field a wrestler against Troy Nickerson. 133-pounder Mike Mormile provided Cornell with an unusual win as both of his points in a 2-1 extra period victory were the result of penalties awarded when the referee determined Harvard's Robbie Preston had voluntarily gone out of bounds. With the score at 16-6, the two teams traded a pair of decisions with Max Meltzer prevailing for Harvard and Keith Dickey for the Big Red.

The match of the night was undoubtedly the clash between Cornell standout 157-pounder Dustin Manotti and Andrew Flanagan. Flanagan controlled the first period, even posting a pair of near falls, as he built a 7-2 lead. Five takedowns by Manotti in the frenzied third period, though, evened the score at 12-12 at brought the crowd to its feet. Unfortunately for Manotti and the fans, Flanagan's early success had given him a riding time advantage and a 13-12 win.

After Manotti's surprising defeat, Steve Anceravage sealed a victory for the Big Red with a pinfall at 3:57 into his match with Patrick Ziemnik. An 11-5 win by Dan Miracola put the finishing touches on the 28-9 triumph.

The Big Red can clinch sole possession of its fourth consecutive Ivy League championship with a win Saturday afternoon against Brown. The match will be held at Friedman Wrestling Center and is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
