    Central Oklahoma upsets Nebraska-Kearney

EDMOND -- No. 9 Central Oklahoma upset No. 2 Nebraska-Kearney 22-16 Friday night in Hamilton Field House in MIAA action to improve to 13-0 on the season and extend the school's second-longest win streak to 20 duals.

The Bronchos, now 2-0 in MIAA duals, jumped out to an early edge with victories in the first three matches.

Zac D'Amico edges Vlad Kazakov 3-2 at 125 pounds, Blake Dauphin beat the second-ranked 133 pound wrestler in the country, Bryce Shoemaker, 5-2, and Joshua Ailey earned a major decision over sixth-ranked 141-pounder Jacob Wasser 11-1 to put the Bornchos ahead 10-0 after three weights.

Nebraska-Kearney (13-5, 2-1) came into the match with six nationally-ranked wrestlers. The Bronchos beat three of them Friday night.

"That was a great match for our guys," UCO head coach Todd Steidley said. "I'm really proud of the way our guys fought tonight. This will be good for them to see that they can wrestle with anybody."

Kearney earned a major decision of its own at 149 pounds and another decision at 157 to make it 10-7.

The teams broke for their locker rooms as Central Oklahoma held an intermission to honor the 26 wrestlers, and the 1979 national championship team, who are in the UCO Hall of Fame.

Returning from the break, Dakota Head put UCO back in the driver seat. Head made his season debut last week in Kearney, Neb. At the Midwest Duals. He went 3-0 there, and won Friday too, an 8-3 decision that put the Bronchos up 13-7.

At 174 pounds, Miguel Barreras earned a signature victory on an outstanding season. The redshirt freshman beat sixth-ranked Calvin Ochs 7-4. Barreras leads the Bronchos with 28 wins this season.

Kearney got a few points back with a decision at 184 pounds, but the Bronchos were quick to rebound.

Greg Wilson, the fourth-ranked 197-pounder in the country, pinned Trey Schlender in just 1:33 to put UCO up 22-10 and secure the upset.

The Bronchos return to the mat on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., hosting Adams State in Hamilton Field House. UCO also hosts Colorado State-Pueblo on Monday at 7 p.m.
