Central Michigan shuts out Ohio, 34-0

MOUNT PLEASANT -- Central Michigan University's wrestling team extended its Mid-American Conference winning streak to 18 with a 34-0 win over Ohio (11-11 overall, 1-4 MAC) before 1,236 fans in Rose Arena on Friday night.

CMU (12-4, 4-0), ranked fourth nationally in the NWCA/InterMat poll, can wrap up its eighth consecutive MAC regular season crown with a win in the regular season finale at Kent State (13-3-1, 3-0-1) on Sunday.

"I think there is going to be a good crowd at Kent State on Sunday," said 15th-year CMU head coach Tom Borrelli. "They've really been promoting the match and I expect a lot of the Cleveland-area kids to come out since it's a Sunday. It should be a good crowd and a good atmosphere."

Friday's shutout was the first for the Chippewas over a MAC opponent since a 36-0 win over Ohio in Rose Arena on Feb. 20, 2004. CMU has now won 22 straight MAC duals in Rose Arena.

CMU seniors Jason Borrelli and Mark DiSalvo both posted wins in their final appearances in Rose Arena. Borrell, ranked 12th nationally at 133 pounds, scored four takedowns and a five-count nearfall in his 13-1 major decision over Terry Jackson. DiSalvo, ranked fifth at 149, posted three takedowns in a 10-4 win over Aaron Gomoll.

"I think it was special for Jason and Mark," Borrelli said of his seniors going out with wins. "They've meant a lot to this program over the past few years."

Wynn Michalak, the nation's top-ranked 197-pounder, improved to 26-1 on the season with a pin of Ohio's Nick Terbay 2:07 into the first period. It is Michalak's 12th fall of the season and 23rd of his career. The sophomore is now tied for ninth at CMU for both pins in a season and a career.

The most exciting individual bout of the evening was at 141. Brandon Carter scored a takedown with a minute remaining in the third period to go in front 6-5, but Albert Madsen answered with a reversal to go up 7-6. Carter escaped to tie the score, then won the bout on a takedown with 15 seconds left.

Following Sunday's regular season finale, CMU has 12 days to prepare for the 2006 MAC Championships. Northern Illinois will host the event March 3-4 in DeKalb, Ill.
