Central comes back to defeat St. Olaf

NORTHFIELD, MINN. -- Coming back from a 12-0 deficit, the No.25 Central College wrestling team knocked off No. 22 St. Olaf (Minn.) 35-15 Thursday night.

Both teams are ranked on D3wrestle.com, and coach Eric Van Kley is proud of the Dutch (2-2 overall) comeback and effort.

“Overall, it was the best effort of the year,” he said. “It was a good dominant win against a ranked opponent.”

Van Kley highlighted Tyler Lowy (junior, Phoenix, Ariz., Thunderbird HS) who claimed a last second win at 197 pounds. Lowy pinned his opponent with just one second to spare.

“When we were down 12-0, Tyler’s win in 6:59 really gave us the momentum to head in the right direction,” Van Kley said. “He wrestled well and was big in helping us secure our team win.”

Powered by Lowy’s victory, the Dutch seniors stepped up with wins by TJ Peretti (Auburn, Wash., Mountainview HS) at 149 and Keegan Overby (Modesto, Calf., Ceres HS) at 165. Peretti had a 14-6 decision win while Overby was victorious with a 17-4 major decision.

“TJ may have had the best effort of the night,” said Van Kley. “He was avenging a loss from the weekend. His opponent beat him in the finals last week and tonight he came out on top. And Keegan was wrestling up, and he got a big win. It was great to see our seniors come out on top.”

Abe Fernandez (junior, Tampa, Fla., Strawberry Crest HS) won by forfeit at 125 while Daniel Page (junior, Tumwater, Wash., Tumwater HS) also won by forfeit at 133. The final two wins of the night came from Aaron Anderson (sophomore, Clarion, Clarion-Goldfield HS) at 141 and Ryan Vandall (freshman, Phoenix, Ariz., Moon Valley HS) at 157. Anderson won with a pin by fall and Vandall had a 4-1 decision.

Central has more than a week to prepare for the Gulf Coast Duals in Fort Meyers, Fla. The Dutch compete at 10 a.m. Dec. 21.
