Calderon highlights late surge as Michigan crushes Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan team used an explosive late surge, earning bonus points in each of the final four bouts, to cruise to a 33-6 win against Maryland on Friday evening (Feb. 5) at the Terps' Xfinity Center Pavilion. The Wolverines claimed eight individual wins, bouncing back from their first Big Ten loss to improve to 6-1 in conference competition.

Junior/sophomore Aaron Calderon stole the show in his dual-meet debut, pinning Maryland's Josh Snook at the 6:50 mark in the 174-pound contest. Calderon, who wrestled at 157 pounds just two weeks ago at the Alma Open, rallied from a late deficit with two third-period takedowns, including a four-point single in the final 30 seconds, to take a late 8-6 lead. Snook kept scrambling, and while going for a reversal in the waning seconds -- with Calderon still controlling a leg -- he rolled up on his back to first give up a near-fall count then the pin.

The Wolverines' upperweight captains maintained the momentum as junior Domenic Abounader, graduate student Max Huntley and junior Adam Coon all earned bonus points to remain unbeaten in dual competition this season.

Abounader, ranked fourth in the latest InterMat poll, used a big third period to defeat Jaron Smith, 10-2, at 184 pounds. He scored on a first-period single leg and second-period reversal, but after struggling to turn Smith, he went to his leg attacks to secure bonus, finishing on two more takedowns to widen the gap. Needing one more for the major, Abounader tried to cut Smith but the Terp wrestler would not stand, instead sacrificing a stall point to give Abounader the major-decision margin after riding time. He improved to 12-0 in duals.

Huntley, ranked sixth nationally, made quick work of Sean Twigg at 197 pounds, cruising to a 17-0 technical fall in just 4:07. He converted a quick single leg before racking up 14 back points on four separate tilts in the first and second periods. Like Abounader, he is 12-0 in duals this season.

Coon, ranked fourth at heavyweight, ended the bout with a first-period pin against Dawson Peck in the final match -- his fourth pin of the season and fifth straight bonus win. After just missing on a pair of early single-leg attacks, Coon converted on his third attempt, getting Peck in a seatbeat bodylock and throwing him down straight to his back to get the fall at the 2:13 mark. Coon is 13-0 on the season.

Senior/junior Conor Youtsey opened the dual with a 10-5 decision against Michael Beck at 125 pounds, just missing out on bonus points of his own after giving up a late takedown. Youtsey scored on four takedowns, including two in the third period with the major decision in mind, and accumulated 2:04 in riding-time advantage.

Maryland earned back-to-back wins at 133 and 141 pounds -- the latter in overtime -- by similar 3-1 margins, before the Wolverines surged ahead with three straight decisions. Sophomore Alec Pantaleo, ranked sixth nationally, evened the dual score with a 5-1 decision against Wade Hodges at 149 pounds. Pantaleo scored the bulk of his points on a four-point feet-to-back takedown late in the first period.

Junior Brian Murphy, ranked ninth nationally, used riding time to defeat Lou Mascola, 6-5, at 157 pounds. Murphy controlled the majority of the bout after takedowns in the first and second periods, but a Mascola escape and takedown late in the latter frame narrowed the score significantly. The Terp added another escape early in the second, but neither wrestler scored again and Murphy's 1:13 riding time proved the difference.

Sophomore Garrett Sutton kicked off a strong second half of the dual for the Wolverines with a 5-2 decision against Brendan Burnham at 165 pounds, using a first-period double leg and a third-period feet-to-back single to control throughout. Sutton just missed on more, not getting back points on the late takedown and finishing with 59 seconds riding time.
