Cal State Bakersfield swamps San Francisco State in final dual of 2006

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Cal State Bakersfield wrestling team closed out its regular season dual schedule with a 38–7 win over NCAA Division II San Francisco State at The Swamp Friday afternoon.

The Roadrunners had an impressive showing, posting eight wins in 10 matches en route to the win over the struggling Gators, ending up with a 5–7 dual meet record. San Francisco State fell to 0–13 on the season after falling to conference foe Chadron State earlier in the day.

Seniors David Garcia (Azusa/Bishop Amat HS) and Brian Busby (San Diego/Scripps Ranch HS) recorded technical fall victories in their final collegiate duals to start off the match. Garcia jumped out to a quick 9–2 lead after the first period and kept the pressure on, eventually recording the 21–5 tech fall victory in 6:30. Busby then followed with a 15–0 tech fall of his own. Bsuby quickly took down Justin Switzler in the opening seconds and recording four three-point near falls to build a 14–0 lead after the first period. The match ended when he was able to escape 1:15 into the second period.

Freshman Garth Wara (Madera HS) picked up his second pin of the year with a fall over the Gator's R.J. Clifford at 174 pounds.

At heavyweight, junior Eric Parker (Ramona HS) continued his impressive run, shutting down Sandeep Singh in a 12–0 major decision victory. Parker held a 5-0 lead going into the final period, but scored a takedown and added three near–fall points to give him the winning margin.

Freshman Thomas Kimbrell (Dawsonville, Georgia/Dawson County HS) picked up the most impressive win of the day, knocking off Virgil Lockett who entered ranked No. 7 at 133 pounds in NCAA Division II. Trailing 2–1 going into the second period, Kimbrell was able to scored a pair of takedowns and two escapes to regain the lead at 6–5 heading to the final two minutes. In the final round, Lockett scored the escape to tie things up, but Kimbrell scored an extra point after Lockett received his second stall warning. The loss snapped Lockett's 12–match winning–streak and dropped him to 23–10 on the season.

Jeremy Doyle (Ramona HS) followed the big win with an 8–0 major decision of Alex Butler at 141 pounds. Senior Anthony Baza (Sunnyvale/Fremont HS) then closed out the match with a 17–0 tech fall win over Merrick Tan in 4:08.

Bakersfield closes out the regular season with the All–California Tournament on Saturday (Feb. 4) hosted by San Francisco State.
