Cal Poly rallies for 21-18 victory over Northern Colorado

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Sohrab Movahedi's takedown with seven seconds remaining sparked the Cal Poly wrestling team to a come-from-behind 21-18 victory over Northern Colorado in a non-conference dual meet Sunday afternoon in Mott Athletics Center.

Trailing 3-2, Movahedi scored the go-ahead points for a 4-3 decision over No. 20-ranked Dylan Gabel at 184 pounds as Coach Jon Sioredas' Mustangs overcame 14-0 and 18-6 deficits for their sixth dual meet victory of the season.

For Movahedi, it was his sixth consecutive win as the junior improved his season record to 13-5.

Cal Poly won six of the 10 bouts and four of the six victories were by one or two points.

After Northern Colorado won the first three bouts by a fall and two major decisions for a 14-0 advantage, Mustang 149-pounder Joshy Cortez began the comeback with a 6-5 decision over Ben Polkowske.

Cortez jumped to a 4-1 lead in the first period with a pair of takedowns and added escapes in each of the final two periods for his 12th win of the season.

At 157, No. 18-ranked Colt Shorts and Northern Colorado's Jimmy Fate were locked in a scoreless duel for two periods. Fate nearly rode out the third period for what appeared to be a 1-0 victory on riding time but locked his hands with four seconds to go, giving Shorts a penalty point and a 1-1 tie.

Shorts scored the only takedown of the bout 27 seconds into the overtime period for the 3-1 decision.

Northern Colorado 165-pounder Keilan Torres recorded his team's third major decision of the dual meet for an 18-6 Bears lead with four bouts to go.

All four were won by the Mustangs.

Xavier Johnson overcame a 3-2 deficit with a second-period reversal and added an escape, takedown and riding time in the final period for an 8-3 decision over Tanner Davis at 174.

Movahedi's 4-3 upset of Gabel at 184 closed the gap to 18-12.

At 197, Mustang redshirt freshman Thomas Lane (12-11) sprinted to a 12-0 lead in the first period with a takedown, a pair of four-point near falls and two penalty points before Jamarcus Grant was warned for stalling a fourth time and disqualified with 12 seconds to go in the opening period.

The disqualification gave Cal Poly six team points and knotted the team score at 18-18 heading into the final bout.

And for the second consecutive dual meet, the Mustangs prevailed by the same score. Cal Poly edged CSU Bakersfield 21-18 last week at Righetti High School as Shorts scored a 6-0 decision in the final bout.

This time, it was Spencer Empey clinching the dual for the Mustangs with a 2-0 decision over Jack Kuck at 285.

After a scoreless first period, Empey tallied an escape in the second period and was awarded a point in the third period as Kuck was penalized for stalling, resulting in the victory and lifting Empey's mark for the season to 15-13.

Cal Poly, which closed out the home portion of its dual meet schedule with Sunday's win and snapped a three-match losing streak to the Bears -- Northern Colorado still leads the series 3-2 -- visits Oregon State on Friday and Boise State on Sunday for Pac-12 duals.
