Buffalo to host NY State Intercollegiate Championships

BUFFALO, NY -- The University at Buffalo will play host to the 38th Annual New York State Intercollegiate Wrestling Championships this Friday and Saturday (Jan. 19-20) at Alumni Arena. The annual tournament will feature 16 colleges and universities from around the state and, for the first time in NYSIWC history, will welcome four state-ranked high school wrestling squads who will match up in dual meet action.

In order to expose college wrestling in New York State to high school programs, the New York State College Wrestling Coach Association have brought in four WNY programs who are all ranked in the top 25 in the state according to the New York State Sportswriters Association. The top ranked high school program in the state, Spencerport, comes into this weekend's events at a perfect 11-0 record. The Rangers will be joined by Rush-Henrietta (5-0) and Niagara-Wheatfield (4-0), who are ranked 16th and 23rd respectively among large schools. Representing the small schools is Fredonia, ranked fifth in the state with a 7-1 record. The high school dual matches will begin on Saturday at 12:30.

This year, the collegiate championships will feature six nationally-ranked teams. Columbia represents the 24th-ranked team in the Division I rankings, earning its first-ever national ranking. A plethora of New York State schools make up a majority of the Division III rankings, led by seventh-ranked Cortland. SUNY Brockport maintains a ranking of 15th despite a record of 0-1, while Ithaca (22nd), Oneonta (25th) and NYU (27th) bring up the bottom. Other schools looking to make an impact this weekend are Alfred State, Army, Buffalo, Hunter, Jamestown CC, Morrisville, Nassau CC, Niagara CC, Oswego State and R.I.T.

The preliminary rounds are set to begin at 11 a.m. Friday morning.
