Buffalo picks up first-ever win over Central Michigan

BUFFALO, NY -- Trailing by four heading in the final match of the night, Troy Keller earned a technical fall win over Blake Montrie to give the University at Buffalo wrestling team a thrilling 18-17 victory over Central Michigan at Alumni Arena on Friday night. It was the Bulls' first-ever win over the Chippewas, after losing the previous 23 meetings.

"Our young guys stepped up tonight," head coach John Stutzman said. "For Keller to get a tech fall to end the match, that's big for him. I told Keller to go hunt some deer and have some fun. He's really good when he is on and we're excited for him."

Starting the night at 174 lbs., Jake Lanning led off the dual with a 6-3 decision over Collin Lieber to give the Bulls a 3-0 lead. After Central Michigan earned the major decision at 184 to take a 4-3 lead, Brett Perry gave the Bulls the lead right back with a win at 197. Perry's 6-2 decision over Landon Pelham gave UB a 6-4 advantage.

Central Michigan won the next two matches, including one by major, to seemingly take control of the dual, 11-6. However, the Bulls answered will two straight wins of their own. Derek Spann earned a 10-0 major decision over Deven Perez at 133, followed by a 7-5 win for Bryan Lantry over Drew Marten at 141 to give Buffalo a 13-11 lead.

Central Michigan won the next two matches by decision to take 17-13 lead heading into the final bout. In stepped Keller. The junior 165-pounder jumped all over Blake Montrie, 12-2, after the first period, bringing the tech fall into play. Three more points in the second period extended his lead to 15-2. After being awarded a point for stalling, all Keller needed to do was finish the period as his riding-time point gave him the 17-2 technical fall win.

The win improved the Bulls to 10-4 on the year, marking the third time in the last four years they have posted double-digit wins in dual matches. Buffalo will next host Ohio next Sunday at Alumni Arena.

"You got to beat someone you're never beaten for people to start believing and I think they're going to start believing," Stutzman said.
