Bucknell scores 22-18 comeback victory at Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Back-to-back pins by Zach Hartman (157) and D.J. Hollingshead (165), and a clutch major decision by Drew Phipps (197), propelled the Bucknell wrestling team to a 22-18 comeback victory at Hofstra on Saturday night.

The Bison (5-6, 3-3 EIWA) flipped a 12-0 deficit into an 18-12 advantage thanks to Hartman and Hollingshead's pins and a Pride forfeit at 174 pounds. After Trey Rogers (184) drew Hofstra (4-9, 0-3 EIWA) back within three points with a decision, Phipps sealed Bucknell's comeback victory with a decisive 11-3 major decision over Nezar Haddad.

The Pride raced out to an early 12-0 lead, winning the first four bouts by decision. Notably, at 125 pounds, Dylan Ryder handed Jakob Campbell his first dual loss of the season, edging the sophomore by a 4-0 margin; Campbell moved to 7-1 in dual action on the season. Then, at 133 pounds, Jacob Martin used a takedown in the second sudden victory period to slip past David Campbell, 4-2.

Hartman cut the Bison's deficit in half by pinning Chris Mauriello in 5:28. Hartman has now pinned four of his past five opponents, bringing his season total to a team-best seven. The freshman, who is currently ranked as high as eighth nationally, improved to 18-4 on the season, which includes a 14-0 mark against unranked opponents.

Hollingshead needed just 31 seconds to even the score at 12-12. His pin of Ricky Stamm was his first since Bucknell's season-opening victory over VMI. After Hofstra forfeited at 174 pounds, the Bison then took their first lead of the night.

Rogers pulled the Pride back within three, at 18-15, with a 5-3 decision over Jacob Ferreira, a freshman competing in just his second dual. Needing at least a major decision to put the dual out of reach entering the heavyweight bout, Phipps delivered; the junior captain registered five takedowns, including two in the third period, and built up nearly two minutes of riding time advantage.

The Bison, who earlier on Saturday blanked Sacred Heart, 40-0, next host North Carolina on Friday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m.; that Sojka Pavilion dual, which is presented by Geisinger, Fairfield Auto Group and Giant, will be streamed live on FloWrestling. Tickets remain on sale at Bucknell.edu/BoxOffice. On Sunday, Feb. 3, Bucknell then welcomes Franklin & Marshall to Davis Gym for a 2 p.m. dual.
