Bucknell picks up 31-9 win over Sacred Heart, Lopez gets 100th win

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Senior Victor Lopez registered his 100th career victory with a dominating tech fall performance and Bucknell had five total victories for bonus points as the Bison wrestling team defeated Sacred Heart 31-9 Saturday afternoon in Sojka Pavilion. Bucknell (9-4, 6-1 EIWA) has now won seven consecutive duals as it improved to 9-0 this year against unranked opponents. The Pioneers fell to 2-10, 0-5 EIWA.

Lopez, who is one of three Bison to be nationally ranked, was the highlight of the day. The NCAA qualifier became the ninth wrestler in program history to reach 100 career wins with a 17-2 victory over Paul Curtin. Lopez built an early 10-0 lead with a takedown and a pair of four-point near falls in the first period. The riding time point propelled him to the tech fall, one of three by Bucknell wrestlers on the day.

Lopez is now 100-49 in his career and is just six victories behind eighth place on the program's career wins list. Current Bison assistant coach Kevin LeValley sits atop the list with 127 career victories.

Tom Sleigh (197 pounds) and Tyler Greene (285) ended the match with back-to-back wins by tech fall, outscoring their opponents by a combined 35-2 in 6:49. Sleigh defeated Mark Boyle 18-2 in 4:30 for his 16th straight victory, while Greene shut out John Hartnett 17-0 in 2:19 for his sixth consecutive win.

Collin Boylan posted a major decision at 165 pounds, tallying four takedowns and a reversal in the second period, while Jordan Gessner was awarded a forfeit at 125 pounds for the Bison, who eclipsed 30 points in a dual match for the third time this season.

Joey Gould registered a 3-0 decision at 133 pounds, while Tyler Smith won by a 7-2 decision at 141 to round out the list of Bucknell winners.

Chad Reese narrowly lost at 174 for the Bison. He scored two third-period takedowns and was on the verge of getting a bout-tying one as the time expired in the third period, giving Dom Celli the 8-6 victory.

Bucknell improved to 6-0 all-time against Sacred Heart as it completed a 2-0 weekend. The Bison defeated American 29-4 on Friday evening.

Bucknell will wrap up its three-match homestand next Friday, Feb. 10, when it hosts Binghamton in Davis Gym. The Bison have just three dual matches remaining in the regular season.
