Bucknell edges Army West Point for ninth straight win

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Junior Tyler Smith won a thrilling matchup of ranked opponents at 141 pounds, and Bucknell rallied with wins in the final three weight classes to upend Army West Point 22-16 in an EIWA wrestling match Sunday at Gillis Field House. The Bison upped their winning streak to nine matches while improving to 11-4 overall and 8-1 in the league.

Smith, who is currently ranked as high as 12th in the national rankings, came through with a 14-10 win in sudden victory over Army's Logan Everett, who is currently ranked as high as 15th. Smith improved to 24-6 with his ninth straight win. He has earned bonus points in six matches during that stretch. He has lost just once in 16 matches dating back to Dec. 17.

Smith's win cut Army's lead to 6-3 after three matches, and started a Bucknell run of three straight victories to give it a 12-6 lead. Freshman Seth Hogue was a 15-11 winner at 149, while No. 14/15/18 Victor Lopez followed with a second-period fall at 157. Lopez improved to 22-5 with his fourth pin of the season.

Army earned bonus points in the next two bouts, winning by fall at 165 and by major decision at 174 to take a 16-12 lead, but Bucknell closed strong to get the victory.

Freshman Garrett Hoffman started the run with a huge 5-4 decision over Jack Wedholm at 184, improving to 16-12 with his second win over the Black Knights wrestler this season. No. 15/10/12 Tom Sleigh helped take some of the pressure off of the heavyweight bout, picking up an extra point with a 14-4 major decision at 197 to put the Bison up 19-16.

Senior Tyler Greene prevented the Bison from having to worry about any tiebreaking procedures with a 5-2 decision over Trevor Smith in the final bout to clinch the match for the Bison, dropping the Black Knights to 6-5 overall and 4-3 in the EIWA. They had won five of their past six matches, including a victory over then-No. 23 Wyoming.

The success of Sleigh and Greene at the end of the lineup has been pivotal to Bucknell's success during their most recent run. Sleigh is now 27-4 with 18 straight wins, including the past five with bonus points. Greene is 17-8 and has won eight consecutive matches.

Bucknell has just one match remaining on the regular season schedule, a home matchup at Davis Gym against Columbia on Friday. The Bison will then turn their attention to the EIWA Championships, which they will host in Sojka Pavilion on March 3-4.
