Bucknell cruises past Sacred Heart, Drexel

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell wrestling team cruised past Sacred Heart, 36-3, and Drexel, 27-2, on Sunday afternoon at Davis Gym.

For the second- and third-straight duals, the Bison (6-3, 5-1 EIWA) won nine of 10 bouts to emerge victorious. Darren Miller (133), David Campbell (141), Matthew Kolonia (149), Jaden Fisher (157), Vincent Andreano (165) and Drew Phipps (197) all went 2-0 during the double header.

Against the Pioneers (4-3, 2-2 EIWA), Bucknell picked up bonus points in six of its victories, highlighted by a pin by Andreano in his first collegiate dual start. The freshman brought J.C. Broems's shoulders to the mat in 4:30.

Geo Barzona (125) staked the Bison an early 5-0 lead, dispatching Sean Faraon by a commanding 18-3 technical fall. By the intermission, Bucknell held a formidable 19-0 lead, bolstered by back-to-back major decisions by Kolonia and Fisher.

Drew Phipps and Eric Chakonis (285) closed out the dual with commanding major decisions. Fisher (5:35), Phipps (3:24) and Frankie Guida, Jr. (2:59) all exceeded two minutes of riding time while Miller (1:52), Kolonia (1:33) and Chakonis (1:07) also earned the riding time point.

Against the Dragons (6-6, 2-2 EIWA), all but one bout was decided by decision. Of those nine decisions, five were decided by two or fewer points.

Fisher accounted for the lone bonus-point victory. The freshman registered eight back points in the third period to dispatch 2019 NCAA qualifier Parker Kropman by a 14-2 major decision; in addition, he rode Kropman out for the entire second period to accumulate an impressive 3:01 of riding time.

After ceding the 125-pound match, the Bison proceeded to win the next nine bouts. Miller got the ball rolling with an impressive 7-2 decision over Chase Shields; after Campbell pulled out a gritty 8-5 decision over Tyler Williams, Kolonia made the Davis Gym crowd erupt by posting a takedown and six points in the first minute of his match; those early points proved to be the difference in his 8-3 decision over Jared Donahue.

Andreano was an 8-2 victor over Mike Manley. By riding Michael O'Malley out for the entire third period, Mitch Hartman (174) pulled out a 3-2 decision in a chippy, back-and-forth bout. Using the riding time point and a late second period takedown, Kyle Inlander (184) downed Anthony Walters, 8-6.

Phipps and Brandon Stokes (285) both won in dramatic fashion to put an exclamation mark on a successful day at Davis Gym. Phipps scored a takedown late in the third period to edge Bryan McLaughlin, 7-5, while Stokes defeated Sean O'Malley in the first sudden victory period, 5-3, on a quick takedown.

As they did against Sacred Heart, the Bison racked up plenty of riding time against Drexel. Andreano (3:16), Fisher (3:01), Miller (2:57), Hartman (2:05) and Campbell (2:03) all exceeded two minutes of riding time while Inlander (1:32) also secured the riding time point.

In their most recent dual before their double-header routs, the Bison won nine of 10 bouts to drop Brown, 31-3, on Jan. 19. They netted bonus points in two of their individual wins, helping them score their largest margin of victory over the Bears in program history.

Bucknell improved to 8-0 all-time against the Pioneers and moved to 4-1 against the Dragons in their past five duals. The Bison return to the road with duals at Franklin & Marshall (Jan. 30 at 7:30 p.m.) and North Carolina (Feb. 1 at 2 p.m.).
