Borshoff's pin propels American to win over Cal Poly

Corey Borshoff earned his first win of the season in dramatic fashion at 133 lbs. to lead the No. 10 American University wrestling team to a 25-13 triumph at No. 19 Cal Poly Friday night in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

Borshoff, a redshirt junior, trailed Cal Poly's Brandan Rocha, 10-5, heading into the third period, but turned the tide with a takedown and then a pin midway through the period to earn the win. The fall was Borshoff's fourth-career pin and it pushed AU's lead to near-unreachable 21-10 advantage with two wrestlers remaining.

"Corey pulled out one of the most exciting victories I've seen in a while," remarked Head Coach Teague Moore. "He found a way to secure a fall that was the deciding factor in our victory. I cannot be happier for Corey."

The dual began at 157 lbs. where No. 4 Ganbayar Sanjaa got American (3-4) off to a strong start with a technical fall over Cal Poly's Gianpier Yanez. Mark Cirello followed with an 11-3 major decision at 165 lbs. against Paul Woodman and American had jumped out to a 9-0 lead through two bouts.

But Cal Poly (2-2) struck back with victories in the next three matches as AU's Phillip Barreiro (decision), Thomas Barreiro (major decision) and No. 14 Daniel Mitchell (decision) each went down at 174 lbs., 184 lbs., and 197 lbs., respectively. Blake Herrin got back the momentum for the Eagles, earning a 3-1 decision at heavyweight against Atticus Disney. Thomas Williams followed with a 3-0 decision at 125 lbs. over Michael Clemmens, which led to Borshoff's pin.

AU and Cal Poly split the final two bouts with No. 14 Matt Mariacher dropping a 3-2 decision at 141 lbs. while Kevin Tao earned a 9-0 major decision at 149 lbs. to cap off the evening.

"This was a total team effort tonight to win this match," added Moore. "Ganbayar led the team off in dominating fashion and Kevin finished it off well. I'm very proud of the guys tonight. We showed a lot of heart with only one of our ranked wrestlers finding a victory."

AU has now won three consecutive matches after dropping its first four duals to open the season. American has also claimed victories on back-to-back nights in California following Thursday's win against Cal State Bakersfield. The Eagles will look to make it four dual victories in a row when they visit No. 23 Stanford on Sunday, January 8 at 5 p.m. EST.
