Bonus points lift Duke over Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Four Blue Devil wrestlers scored bonus points in their matches to lead the Duke wrestling team to a 28-18 dual victory over Cal Poly tonight. Jake Faust, Conner Hartmann, Zach Finesilver and Mitch Finesilver all registered extra points in the triumph.

The Blue Devils improve to 2-5 on the year as they go 1-1 on the West Coast tour. Cal Poly falls to 1-5 overall.

After the Mustangs grabbed the lead to start the evening with a narrow 5-4 decision at 157 pounds, 17th-ranked Faust gave the Blue Devils their first lead of the night with a 10-2 major decision over Blake Kastl. Faust finished the weekend of duals 2-0 and improves to 5-2 in duals.

A forfeit at 174 by the Blue Devils coupled with a decision for Cal Poly at 184 launched the Mustangs back in front 12-4 through the first four matches.

Undefeated in duals this season and 15-1 overall, fifth-ranked Hartmann didn't even break a sweat in pinning JT Goodwin in 22 seconds to pull the Blue Devils within two, 12-10. The fall was his second of the weekend, fourth of the year and the fastest of his career.

Brendan Walsh did his part at 285, edging Spencer Empey by a 4-2 decision, to put the Blue Devils back in the lead 13-12. The redshirt senior took a 2-0 lead into the second period and never relinquished his lead to pick up win No. 10 on the year.

The Blue Devils and Mustangs traded forfeits at 125 and 133, respectively, keeping Duke in front 19-18 with two bouts remaining.

At 141, Zach used a monster second period to break open a 4-4 draw with Connor Pollock. Zach, 16-9 on the year, got taken down early in the second period and responded in a big way to lead 17-6 after five minutes of wrestling. The redshirt freshman extended his lead in the third to score a crucial five points with a 25-10 technical fall.

A perfect 6-0 in duals this season and 17-5 on the year, Mitch didn't skip a beat for the Blue Devils at 149. The Colorado native started to pull away in the second period, 6-0, and only extended his lead in the third en route to his fifth major decision of the year and Duke's second dual win of the 2015-16 season.

The Blue Devils return to ACC action Friday, Jan. 22 at Virginia. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. and will be streamed live. Links will be available at GoDuke.com.
