    Bloomsburg shuts out Clarion in EWL action

    BLOOMSBURG -- The Bloomsburg University wrestling team recorded their first shutout victory since the 1999-2000 season with a 42-0 win over Clarion in Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) action Friday night. With the win, the Huskies move to 8-7 on the season, 2-1 in EWL competition.

    125-Fourteenth-ranked Mike Sees (Northumberland/Shikellamy) won by forfeit.

    133-Ricky Donald (Millville/Bloomsburg) got the match off to an exciting start with a 4-2 overtime win against the Golden Eagles' Rob LaBrake. LaBrake struck first with a takedown just 13 seconds into the match followed by a Donald escape 20 seconds later. After selecting the defensive position in the second period, Donald tied the match at two with an escape with 23 seconds remaining. In the overtime period, Donald won the match on a takedown with 47 seconds remaining.

    141-Brad Forbes (Downingtown/Downingtown) gave the Huskies a 12-0 lead with a 5-1 win over Clarion's Greg Lewis. Leading 2-0 after the first period, Forbes scored another point on an escape from the defensive position to take a 3-0 lead into the third. Despite a Lewis escape in the final period, Forbes was able to score another takedown to win the bout for the Huskies.

    149-George Hickman (Wilmington, NC/Riverside) won a 9-6 decision at 149 pounds over the Golden Eagles' Derrick Smith. Hickman scored two takedowns to take an early lead. In the second period, he scored on an escape before tallying three takedowns in the final period to get the win for Bloomsburg giving the Huskies a 15-0 lead.

    157-Bloomsburg's Aric Fuhrman (Spring Grove/Delone Catholic) gave the Huskies a 19-0 lead with a 13-2 major decision win over the Golden Eagles' Lucas Christopher. After the first period, Fuhrman took a 2-0 lead before scoring seven points in the second period to take a 9-2 lead. Fuhrman scored his final four points on three backpoints and riding time.

    165-Despite trailing 5-4 going into the final period, Frank Beasley (Oden, IL/Centralia) won a 10-5 decision over the Golden Eagles' Chris Goings. At the 1:22 mark in the third period, Beasley took a 6-5 lead on a reversal from the defensive position. Beasley sealed the win with three backpoints at the 57-second mark and also earned a point for riding time. With the win, the Huskies took a 22-0 lead.

    174-Jim Bertulis (Aston/Garnett Valley) got his first dual-match of the season with a 15-0 technical fall win over Clarion's Dave Gardner. After a takedown just 20 seconds in the match, Bertulis scored 11 straight backpoints to jump out to the 13-0 lead. Just over four minutes into the match, Bertulis scored another takedown to win the bout for the Huskies.

    184-Nate Shirk (Middleburg/Middleburg) gave the Huskies a 30-0 lead with a 5-3 decision over Clarion's Dominic Ross. In the first period, Shirk scored a takedown at the 2:17 mark, which Ross countered with an escape with 1:44 remaining in the period. Going into the third period, Shirk held a 4-3 lead and scored his final point on an escape from the defensive position.

    197-Jesse Hasseman (Franklin, IN/Franklin) won by forfeit.

    HWT-Mike Spaid (Perkiomenville/Boyertown) finished the match with a pin against A.J. Brooks 4:01 into the match. Spaid scored three points in the first period on a takedown and an escape to take a 3-1 lead going into the second period. Spaid also scored three more points in the second period on another escape and takedown.

    The Huskies will host Cleveland State in an EWL match-up on Sunday at 1:00 at Nelson Field House.
