    Bloomsburg rolls over Ohio

    BLOOMSBURG -- The 20th-ranked Bloomsburg University wrestling team rolled to a 24-9 win over Ohio University on Sunday at the Nelson Field House.

    Bloomsburg won seven of the 10 matches, including three by major decision, in getting the victory.

    The opening match of the day at 285 pounds featured a pair of nationally ranked wrestlers. Ohio's Jeremy Johnson, ranked number 15, took early control of the bout scoring two takedowns in the first period to lead 4-1. In the second period after Bloomsburg's Justin Grant (Easton/Easton), ranked 16th, scored an escape, Johnson was awarded a point after a second stalling warning on Grant. In the third period Johnson got the only point of the period and with riding time won 7-2.

    Bloomsburg came back at 125 pounds with Sean Boylan (Seaville, NJ/St. Marks) scoring an 11-2 win by major decision over Tyler Heminger. Boylan got a first period takedown, then scored a second period takedown and a three-point near fall to go up 7-0. Boylan added an escape and takedown and with riding time easily won.

    At 133 pounds Bloomsburg's Nick Wilcox (Greene, NY/Greene Central) and Ohio's Joe Munos were scoreless after one period. In the second period Wilcox started down and Munos was able to turn him for a two-point near fall. Wilcox, ranked 15th, got an escape followed by a takedown to go on top 3-2. In the third, Munos was able to escape to tie the score, but Wilcox won the bout with riding time by a 4-3 score.

    The Bobcats made it 7-6 with a win at 141 pounds by Kagan Squire who won 6-1 oevr Matt Rappo (Holland/Council Rock South). After no scoring in the opening period, Squire went on top 3-0 with an escape followed by a takedown. He later added a third period takedown and a point for riding time for the victory.

    Bloomsburg's Josh Roosa (Mountaintop/Crestwood) helped the Huskies regain momentum at 149 pounds with a win over Andrew Romanchick of Ohio. Romanchick took the early lead with a takedown, but Roosa worked an escape to trail 2-1 after one period. After no scoring in the second period, Roosa was down to start the third period and scored an escape and a takedown to win 5-2.

    At 157 pounds Bloomsburg's Frank Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/E.A. Laney), ranked 12th, started slowly with Ohio's Sparty Chino with Chino getting an early takedown. Hickman thought escaped and had a takedown of his own to lead 3-2 after one period. In the second period Hickman grabbed control of the bout getting three takedowns and a two-point near fall, then followed it up with three more third period takedowns to easily win 18-6 with riding time.

    Bloomsburg's Josh Veltre (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) at 165 pounds ran his winning streak to 16 straight matches with as 6-5 win over Harrison Hightower. The match was tight throughout and was tied at 2-2 after one period after Veltre had a takedown, while Hightower got a reversal. Veltre had a takedown in each of the next two periods to come away with the victory giving the Huskies a 17-6 lead.

    At 174 pounds Ohio's Cody Walters, ranked 19th, got the only scoring of the bout in the second period when he scored a reversal on Bloomsburg's Chris Smith (Mineral, Va./Chancelor) to win 2-0.

    At 184 pounds Bloomsburg's Andre Petroski (Glenn Mills/Springfield) dominated his match with Ohio's Ryan Garringer leading 7-0 after one period on a takedown and a two-point and a three-point near fall. Petroski went on to win 10-1.

    The Huskies closed out the match at 197 pounds with 17th-ranked Richard Perry (Meriden, CT/Middletown) winning 602 over Phillip Wellington. Perry led just 2-0 after one period and just 2-1 after two periods. But Perry escaped to open the frame, then scored a takedown to come away with a 6-2 victory.

    Bloomsburg is now 11-2 on the season, while Ohio falls to 3-3 on the year. The Huskies host 16th-ranked Edinboro University on Friday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m.

    165 Josh Veltre (Bloomsburg) won by decision over Harrison Hightower (Ohio) 6-5.
    174 Cody Walters (Ohio) won by decision over Christopher Smith (Bloomsburg) 2-0.
    184 Andre Petroski (Bloomsburg) won by major decision over Ryan Garringer (Ohio) 10-1.
    197 Richard Perry (Bloomsburg) won by decision over Phillip Wellington (Ohio) 6-2.
