    Bloomsburg edges Edinboro

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -- The Bloomsburg University wrestling team won its second consecutive dual on Friday night as it edged the visiting Fighting Scots of Edinboro University, 21-19, at the Nelson Field House in an Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) contest. Bloomsburg improved to 2-4 overall and 1-2 against EWL opponents while Edinboro dropped to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the EWL standings.

The victory snapped a five-match losing skid against the Fighting Scots as Bloomsburg picked up its first victory against its EWL-rival since January 25, 2013, when it earned a 19-18 win at the Nelson Field House.

The Huskies started strong with wins in four of the first five bouts of the night which included a pair of pins from junior Willy Girard (Williamstown, Pa/Williams Valley) and redshirt junior Grant Bond (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs) at 125 and 149 pounds, respectively. Girard picked up his 13th victory of the season - second via fall - as he needed 2:14 to take down Arick Shankles to give the Huskies a 6-0 advantage. Redshirt junior Lewis Williams (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) extended the lead to 9-0 as he earned a 14-8 decision over Richie Gomez at 133 pounds. Williams improved to 7-11 overall and 2-4 in duals this season.

After a fall by Edinboro's Carmine Ciotti at 141 pounds cut the Bloomsburg advantage to 9-6, Bond needed just 1:35 to pin Christopher Matzke to extend the lead to 15-6. The redshirt junior improved to 11-4 overall and earned his team-leading fourth pin of the season. Junior Nate Newberry (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) followed with a 3-2 win in the first tiebreaker over Tim Suter in the 157-pound bout to balloon the advantage to 18-6. Newberry hit double figures with the victory as he improved to 10-9 overall on the year.

Edinboro earned a decision at 165 pounds and a major decision at 174 pounds to trim the Huskies' lead to 18-13 before redshirt junior Trevor Allard (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) posted a 10-4 victory over Zach Ancewicz at 184 pounds to extend the advantage to 21-13. Allard moved to 17-9 on the season and has now won 13 of his last 16 matches. The win proved to be just enough as the Fighting Scots collected wins by decision at 197 and 285 for the final margin.

Bloomsburg, winners of two straight, will head to Clarion University on Sunday afternoon, January 13. The action is slated to get underway at 2:00 p.m.
