"Pitt is a great team,” head assistant coach Eric Guerrero said. “From a technical, tactical and performance standpoint, there was quite a bit of good and a little shaky. A lot of that is critical crunch-time wrestling, and we're continuing to work on that. It's improved drastically.”
Starting the day strong for the Cowboys, 125-pounder Eddie Klimara earned his second-straight win and six points for the team with a pin over Derrick Nelson in 6:23.
Top-ranked wrestlers Jordan Oliver and Chris Perry ran through their opponents, each snagging five takedowns to win by major decisions at 149 and 174, respectively.
Alex Dieringer and Tyler Caldwell each picked up decisions in their respective weight classes. Dieringer's collection of takedowns, nearfalls and reversals gave him an 8-2 win over Donnie Tasser at 157 pounds. In the 165-pound bout, Caldwell earned his eighth win over a ranked opponent this season with his 5-1 triumph over No. 13 Tyler Wilps.
Chris Chionuma sealed the dual for the Cowboys, upsetting No. 14 Max Thomusseit, 7-2.
Finishing out the day for OSU, Alan Gelogaev delivered an 8-3 decision over eighth-ranked Zac Thomussiet.
Cowboy wrestling returns to action on Jan. 27 when it travels to Glendale, Ariz., to take on Arizona State at 12 p.m. CT.
