The Cowboys and Golden Gophers split the dual, winning five matches each. It was the Cowboys' two bonus-point wins coming at critical times that lifted the Pokes to their first win over the Gophers since 2012.
"In tough matches bonus points are always the key, like when (Alex) Dieringer went out and got the tech. Then, I liked the way (Kyle) Crutchmer started his match in on the legs, and came back late in the first period with a lateral drop," coach John Smith said. "I think the more exciting thing is once you put people to their back, hold them there, and get the pin. That's what he did in a time that we needed him."
Fifth-ranked Eddie Klimara went 2-0 on the weekend as he started Sunday's dual with a win for the Pokes with an 8-2 decision over Skyler Petry. The Cowboy recorded three takedowns to separate himself from the Gopher and give OSU a 3-0 lead.
Minnesota picked up a major decision at 133 pounds, swinging the team score in favor of the Golden Gophers, 4-3.
At 141 pounds, Dean Heil came out victorious in a top-10 matchup. Ranked No. 1 in the nation, Heil took out No. 9 Tommy Thorn in a 7-3 decision, picking up three takedowns and an escape. Heil improves to 6-0 on the season.
"It was a good match," Heil said. "A lot of people were hyping up the match, but every match is the same in my opinion. Whether he's ranked or not, or how high or low. It felt good to get the win."
The Cowboys dropped a heartbreaker at 149 pounds as Minnesota's Jake Short edged out No. 8 Anthony Collica, 2-1. Each wrestler tallied an escape to tie the score 2-2 in the third period. Collica called an injury timeout after an attempt at a takedown, giving Short the option to take the bottom position and score an escape with less than 30 seconds left to knock off the Cowboy, 2-1.
Minnesota picked up another decision at 157 pounds to give Minnesota a 10-6 lead.
Two consecutive bonus-point wins from the Cowboys gave them a lead that they maintained throughout the dual.
Alex Dieringer was on the mat for 4:13, before ending his match in an 18-1 technical fall and adding five points to the team score. No. 1 Dieringer picked up three takedowns and three four-point nearfalls, while giving up only one point to Minnesota's Brandon Krone at 165 pounds.
Kyle Crutchmer added to the Cowboys' comeback effort as he was ready to go at the whistle. Late in the first period, Crutchmer hit a huge lateral drop that put Jordan Rothers to his back and seconds later was awarded the pin.
"I think that's the first pin I've ever had in Gallagher," Crutchmer said. "It was exciting and I want to do anything I can to help this team win. Being behind Alex (Dieringer) is nice and helps a lot. Sometimes you just train so hard that good things happen."
Winning the final bout for the Pokes was Nolan Boyd at 184 pounds, who defeated Chris Pfarr, 4-1. Boyd notched the loan takedown of the match in the first period and rode out the Gopher for the remainder of the period. Boyd only gave up an escape, which was in the third period.
Jordan Rogers got the nod at 197 pounds and faced No. 6 Brett Pfarr. The Cowboy fell in a major decision, 16-5.
With the Cowboys leading 20-14, the dual came down to heavyweight, where Austin Schafer was bumped up to go head to head with No. 9 Michael Kroells. The Cowboy, who gave up 65 pounds to the Gopher, fought off Kroells and picked up a takedown in the third period, but it was not enough as Schafer dropped an 8-3 match; however, the Oklahoma State went on to win the dual 20-17.
The Cowboys return to Gallagher-Iba Arena on Dec. 6 to face No. 8 North Carolina State at 2 p.m.
