The Cowboys improve to 9-2 on the season and have six wins over top-25 opponents.
"I think the team that Iowa State put out on the mat is young and developing and you hope to see a score like that against a team like this," John Smith said. "It's easy to say and hard to do, but we did it tonight. As you saw today, we struggled a little bit offensively. Not because of effort, but they stayed in good position and were grabbing wrists to slow it down. That's not our style and I don't know if it's their style. Maybe they were outmatched and that's the way to keep the score down, but we need to continue to focus on our offense."
Once again, No. 5 Eddie Klimara opened the dual with a win, defeating Kyle Larson with a 15-0 technical fall. With his first takedown coming midway through the first period, Klimara exposed the Cyclone wrestler for two sets of nearfall points to lead 10-0. Two more takedowns and an escape ended the match in 3:13.
"I just wanted to come out here and prove to myself that all the work that I have been doing would pay off," Klimara said. "I wanted to go out there and put up points. Tonight, all the moves I did, I hit. I was on attack on my offense, and it felt nice to get out there and score."
Gary Wayne Harding gave the crowd an exciting match at 133 pounds against No. 9 Earl Hall. Harding went down 4-2 after two Cyclone takedowns in the first period. Another Hall takedown in the second period gave him a 6-3 advantage over Harding, but a late takedown from the Cowboy tied up the match at 6-6 going into the final period. Harding rode Hall until the three seconds remained on the clock, giving Hall a 7-6 win and Harding just 59 seconds of riding time.
The 141-pound bout started slow, but No. 1 Dean Heil put the first points on the board in the second period with a reversal over Nathan Boston. He separated the score with a takedown late in the third period and picked up a riding time point for a 5-0 win.
At 149 pounds, Anthony Collica's hand was raised just eight seconds into the match as No. 20 Gabe Moreno suffered a shoulder injury, giving the Pokes six team points.
Joe Smith rounded out his home debut with another win, defeating Renaldo Rodriguez-Spencer. Smith earned three takedowns in the match for a 10-2 major decision. Smith now holds a 26-2 record for the year.
Alex Dieringer followed up Smith's performance with another major decision win at 165 pounds. Top-ranked Dieringer faced No. 10 Tanner Weatherman, who he scored four takedowns on as well as a four-point nearfall. The win extends Dieringer's win streak to 68, putting him just six wins away from matching OSU legend Mike Sheet's win streak.
"Every time I have had a loss, or a bad match like Friday night, I've always gotten better from it," Dieringer said. "It really eats me inside when I don't get bonus points for the team or for myself, so I think not being complacent is the only way to get better."
Kyle Crutchmer redeemed a 3-1 loss from earlier this weekend when he defeated Lelund Weatherspoon with a 5-2 decision. The No. 3 Cowboy got two first-period takedowns and a quick escape in the third to give him his 17th win of the season.
Nolan Boyd notched his second win of the weekend after a big upset over Mizzou's fourth-ranked Willie Miklus. Boyd face Dane Prestano at 184 pounds, where the first period ended scoreless. Boyd scored a reversal to start the second period and open scoring. He later scored a takedown in the period and a full-period ride in the third for a 5-2 win.
Preston Weigel earned his first dual win on Sunday afternoon in style, taking down Marcus Harrington with a 10-0 major decision. Weigel scored a takedown in the first period and picked up two sets of back points. In the second period, he earned an escape and notched another takedown to seal the win.
At heavyweight, Austin Marsden tallied his second bonus-point win of the weekend with a fall over Quean Smith in 3:39. The Cowboy senior led the Cyclone 12-0 before the stick. He improves to 18-1 on the season.
The Pokes will take a week off from competition but will return to the mat on Feb. 5 to take on Oklahoma inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
