Oklahoma State bests Iowa State in return to Gallagher-Iba

STILLWATER -- Cowboy wrestling notched its sixth conference win of the season Sunday afternoon in Gallagher-Iba Arena when it defeated Iowa State, 22-15. The win marked coach John Smith's 421st career dual win, which ties him for the fifth most among NCAA Division I wrestling coaches.

It also marks the sixth win for the Cowboys against a ranked opponent on the year. The Pokes took six of 10 bouts from the Cyclones, and in his first match inside GIA in nearly two years, Joe Smith collected a fall at 174 pounds over Marcus Coleman. After notching a single takedown in the first period, Smith turned the Cyclone for the fall in 2:41.

"I was excited," coach John Smith said. "We all love pins, and it was exciting for me to watch him get on here. He's been working hard and kind of finding his way right now. It was a good time for him to get things going."

Also earning bonus points for the Cowboys was Nick Piccininni, who took a 14-2 major decision from Alex Mackall. After a scoreless first period, the Cowboy took Mackall to the mat and turned him for his 12th dual nearfall this season.

Wyatt Sheets fell just short in his Gallagher-Iba debut, dropping a 3-2 decision to Iowa State's Chase Straw. Kaid Brock lost to No. 14 Ian Parker, who was coming off a big win over Oklahoma's Dom Demas. Dakota Geer lost a close decision to sixth-ranked Willie Miklus in the 197-pouind bout, and in the dual finale, Boo Lewallen lost via injury default to No. 12 Jerrett Degen.

Jacobe Smith clinched a 9-3 decision over 19th-ranked Sam Colbray at 184 pounds after going up early in the first period, scoring two takedowns. Since bumping up a weight, Smith has gone 2-1 over ranked opponents.

At 133 pounds, Daton Fix wrestled his eighth match against a ranked opponent this season and his sixth top-20 foe in the Cowboys' past seven contests. He bounced back from a loss at Pitt and defeated No. 9 Austin Gomez in a 5-4 decision with riding time.

Heavyweight Derek White collected his 20th win of the season in a 7-1 decision over the Cyclones' Gannon Gremmel. After dropping his most recent matches at 165 pounds, Andrew Shomers defeated Logan Schumacher, 8-2. Shomers notched two takedowns and a reversal, to maintain the top position long enough to score the riding time point.
