“I thought it was a great performance tonight,†head coach Jack Spates said. “I thought for the most part we did well, especially since we really trained through this experience.â€
The evening began with an exhibition match between Justin DeAngelis and Bobby Williams at 149 pounds. DeAngelis took the early, 2-0, lead after a first period takedown and never looked back. DeAngelis, the 2010 Lindenwood champion, won the match 8-0.
Intrasquad action opened with the 125 pound dual between Jarrod Patterson and Greg Cannon. Patterson, the defending Big 12 champion, ran out to a 5-0 lead late in the second period before Cannon had a reversal, 5-2. Patterson poured it on in the third period when he added two more escapes to take the victory, 10-4, and give the Red team a 3-0 advantage.
“I thought Jarrod Patterson did some real good things and turned a pretty tough match into a route,†Spates said.
The 133-pound bout was decided in the third period between sophomore Alex Ekstrom and freshman Dustin Reed. Ekstrom led 3-1 going into the final period but Reed got an escape to close within one. Ekstrom closed out the win for the Red team after gaining a minute of riding time and the 4-2 decision.
Returning All-American Zack Bailey then recorded the victory at 141 pounds over Scott Chene with a total of seven takedowns in the match. Chene was only able to muster multiple escapes throughout, giving Bailey a 16-4 win and putting the Red team up 10-0.
“I thought Zack Bailey, just his aggressiveness and his relentlessness, has really turned the corner,†Spates said. “He's a great wrestler and I'm real excited to watch him this year.â€
Freshman Nick Lester took to the mat for the Red team taking on Shane Vernon. After a scoreless first period Lester posted an escape to give him the early, 1-0, lead. Vernon accounted for an escape in the third period to send it to overtime. In overtime Lester secured the win, 3-1, with a takedown.
The Red team continued the route after Matt Lester pinned Parker Madl in the 157-pound bout, putting the Red team up 19-0.
The most exciting matchup of the night came at the 165 pound contest between newcomer Chase Nelson and Kyle Detmer. Nelson led 2-1 going into the second period but Detmer evened it at 2-2 after posting an escape. In the third period Nelson went ahead 3-2 after an escape, but
Detmer took over the lead, 4-3, with a takedown with just 15 second remaining. However, Nelson secured a reversal at the last second to claim a 5-4 victory and gave the White team its first win.
“Kyle Detmer is tough and it is a big high school rivalry between them. They have wrestled each other quite a bit. That was a tough match. Kyle made a great move to go ahead and it looked as if the match was lost but that's the key in wrestling. You don't quit and you don't put your head down. Chase didn't and came from behind to win.â€
At 174 pounds Dax Perrier gave the White team its second victory after the Pawhuska, Okla., native posted a 2-1 win over Nolan McBryde, with riding time being the deciding factor.
The Red team got back on the winning track after Erich Schmidtke narrowly defeated returning NCAA participant Jeff James. Schmidtke won 2-1 with an escape and the help of a James penalty.
Keldrick Hall took an early 6-1 first period lead over Quincy Mondaine in the 197-pound bout due to his two takedowns and a nearfall. Hall put the Red team up 25-6 going into the heavyweight showdown.
In the heavyweight matchup Nathan Fernandez took the early lead with a first period takedown. In the second period Fernandez earned two escapes to take a 4-2 lead. In the third Back secured an escape but fell to the senior, 4-3.
“I see a lot of potential. We need to tighten up and improve in finishing, but for the most part we did a pretty good job.â€
The Sooners will officially kick off the 2010-11 season Saturday, Nov. 7 when they compete in the Oklahoma City Open, hosted by Oklahoma City University.
