Oklahoma downs Iowa State in Ames

AMES, Iowa -- The No. 14 Oklahoma wrestling team downed Iowa State, 30-12, on Friday night inside Hilton Coliseum. With the win the Sooners moved to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in the Big 12.

The Sooners used five bonus-point victories, including one pin, two technical falls and two major decisions, for their sixth win in the month of January.

Davion Jeffries started off the dual at 149 pounds with a 9-1 major decision over Gabe Moreno. The match was scoreless after the opening period, but Jeffries secured a reversal to start the second and tacked on a 4-point nearfall to lead 6-0 through the second. The sophomore added a takedown and the riding-time point in the final frame for the bonus-point win.

In the 157-pount bout, No. 13 Clark Glass knocked off Colston DiBlasi by 5-4 decision. Glass held a 3-2 lead after the opening frame and tacked on a reversal in the second for a 5-3 advantage. Glass held on in the third to put the Sooners up 7-0 through two matches.

At 165 pounds, Yoanse Mejias kept the momentum rolling for the Sooners with a 15-7 major decision over Logan Breitenback. Mejias stormed out to a 6-3 lead by way of three takedowns in the opening period and tacked on another in the second. The junior added two takedowns, a penalty point and the riding-time point for the bonus-point victory.

No. 19 Brad Johnson extended the Oklahoma lead to 16-9 with a 19-4 technical fall in 5:59 over Marcus Harrington. Johnson tallied six takedowns, a 4-point nearfall and a 2-point nearfall in the matchup to give the Sooners a 16-9 advantage through six matches.

Ross Larson made quick work of Quean Smith in the heavyweight bout, recording a win by fall in 1:00 for his 50th career pin. The redshirt senior is the current active NCAA career-pins leader and needs just nine more falls to break the OU career-pins record of 58 set by Dan Chaid.

Mike Longo capped off the match on a strong note for the Sooners, knocking off John Meeks by 15-0 technical fall in six minutes. Longo led 2-0 after the opening period but added two takedowns and two 4-point nearfalls in the second frame to give the Sooners their second consecutive score of 30-or-more points.
