    Oklahoma dominates Iowa State

AMES, Iowa -- Seventh-ranked Oklahoma ended an eight-match losing streak to No. 15 Iowa State Friday after defeating the Cyclones 33-7 at the Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa.

The Sooners (10-1, 1-1) snapped a skid that dated back to 2003 and earned their first win in Big 12 action.

“It was a very impressive performance,” Jack Spates said. “The guys were very aggressive from every position whether it be top, bottom or neutral. This is a team that has beaten us in the past and we dominated today.”

The dual began with a highly-anticipated bout between OU’s fourth-ranked Tyler Caldwell and the Cyclones No. 10-ranked Andrew Sorenson at 165 pounds. However the match was a one-sided affair that saw Caldwell run away with a 9-1 major decision victory.

ISU’s top-ranked Jon Reader returned the favor after earning a major decision win over Oklahoma’s Jeff James, 13-4, to even the score, 4-4.

OU’s 18th-ranked Erich Schmidtke gave the Sooners a 7-4 lead after defeating the Cyclones’ Cole Shafer by a 5-0 decision. Schmidtke scored a takedown and reversal in the first and second period, respectively, and added 1:42 in riding time.

At 197-pounds OU’s Keldrick Hall took Iowa State’s Jerome Ward, ranked No. 13, to overtime but gave up a takedown with three seconds remaining to drop a 3-1 decision.

With the score tied at seven Oklahoma’s Nathan Fernandez, ranked No. 11 amongst heavyweights, began a string of six-straight victories for the Sooners after scoring an 11-4 decision over Iowa State’s 18th-ranked Kyle Simonson.

In the 125-pound match OU’s Jarrod Patterson, No. 7 nationally, earned six takedowns, an escape and 1:14 in riding-time to run away with a 14-3 major decision win over ISU’s Brandon Jones. The Sooners second major decision win put OU up 14-7.
At 133 pounds Jordan Keller never trailed ISU’s Ben Cash and secured a 9-2 victory after accumulating 1:27 riding time to go along with three takedowns and two escapes.

Senior Zack Bailey was awarded a victory by forfeit at 141 pounds due to multiple injuries sustained to ISU’s Chris Droiun. With the forfeit OU held a comfortable 23-7 lead going into the final bouts.

Matt Lester earned the Sooners third win by major decision after he dominated Iowa State’s Nate Carr, 13-3. Lester was close to pinning Carr on multiple occasions but was unable to get both shoulders down and had to settle for three nearfalls. Lester had a total of 4:40 of riding time over the Cyclone and earned an additional two takedowns.

The Sooners closed out the evening with a Chase Nelson pin of ISU’s Trent Weatherman in 1:13. The score was tied, 2-2, but Nelson muscled Weatherman to his back and the eventual pin.

“I am very proud of our kids and this is the way we need to be wrestling going into the end-run,” Spates said.

The Sooners return to the friendly confines of the Howard McCasland Field House when they host No. 16 Nebraska on Friday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m.
