Iowa State impresses at Cardinal and Gold intrasquad

AMES, Iowa -- The Iowa State wrestling team kicked off the 2012-13 season Thursday night at the annual Cardinal and Gold intrasquad dual in the Lied Recreation Center. A standing-room only crowd came out in full force to show their support, and the Cyclones put on a show in return.

"I liked the aggressiveness we showed throughout and the entertainment value of the dual," Iowa State head coach Kevin Jackson said. "I think we can springboard off of this to continue to get better. I really like the direction of our depth and that's what we need to have to perform at a high level inside our wrestling room so I'm pleased with that."

Redshirt sophomore Luke Goettl and freshman Gabe Moreno provided the most thrilling match of the evening, as Goettl scored a three-point near fall in the final 20 seconds of the third period to force a 5-5 tie and overtime. Moreno got a takedown 15 seconds into the overtime period to get the 7-5 win. The Urbandale, Iowa native came into Iowa State as a highly touted recruit, ranked no. 2 in the country by InterMat at 145.

Redshirt senior Matt Gibson of Vallejo, Calif., looked ready to build on his 2012 Big 12 heavyweight championship, winning in a 12-0 technical fall over Cyclone freshman Tyler Swope.

A match at 125 pounds pitted redshirt sophomore Ryak Finch against freshman Kyle Larson. Finch, a native of Safford, Ariz., looked impressive, jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the first period and ended with a 6-1 decision over Larson, who hails from West Des Moines.

At 133 pounds, Cyclone fans got a glimpse of the future as freshman John Meeks of Des Moines, Iowa took on Kamehameha, Hawaii native Shayden Terukina in a hotly contested match. Meeks, who won four state championships in high school while going 168-0, pulled away late in the match for a 10-5 decision. Like Moreno, Meeks was also a highly touted recruit, ranked no. 2 in the country by InterMat at 138.

"I think it's obvious that we have a couple of guys that are capable at the 133 pound weight class and they're going to challenge each other," Jackson said. "We have a true wrestle-off for that weight. That shows our growth as far as our depth is concerned."

The Cyclones will be back in action on Nov. 10 for the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open in Hilton Coliseum at 9 a.m.
