Iowa State claims 22-17 road victory over SDSU

BROOKINGS, S.D. -- No. 16 Iowa State (5-3, 2-0 Big 12) claimed its second Big 12 victory of the season, taking out South Dakota State (6-4, 3-1 Big 12) 22-17. The Cyclones claimed six out of the 10 matches, including one by pin and one by major decision.

    How It Happened
It was a slow start for the Cyclones in Brookings, dropping the first two matches by major decision. From there, Iowa State went on to win four matches in a row, taking control of the dual.

Alex Mackall provided fireworks in the front half of the dual for the Cardinal and Gold. Heading to the second period, Mackall led 2-1 after a first-period takedown over Danny Vega. He extended the lead to 3-1 on an escape. Vega then scored on a takedown with under 30 seconds in the period. Mackall showed great mat awareness in the waning moments of the second, reversing Vega and pinning the Jackrabbit in 4:54.

Gannon Gremmel and Todd Small each scored decisions at 285 and 133 pounds, respectively. Gremmel defeated Blake Wolters with a takedown near the end of the third period, 4-3. Small tallied five takedowns in an 11-4 victory over Zach Price.

At the intermission, Iowa State held a 12-8 advantage over South Dakota State.

Out of the break, Ian Parker kept the Cyclone momentum going. He churned out three takedowns and garnered 1:10 of riding time to defeat Clay Carlson, 8-2.

At 157 pounds, David Carr jumped out to a 12-1 lead in the first period over Colten Carlson. Carr scored on two takedowns and a pair of four-point nearfalls in the first stanza. He added a reversal, an escape and a point for riding time to take the match by 16-5 major decision.

The dual came down to the final bout between Sam Colbray and Cade King. With ISU leading 19-17, the dual was on Colbray's shoulders. He left little doubt, tallying two takedowns, an escape and riding time of 1:55 to ice away the victory for the Cyclones on a 6-1 decision.
