"This was a great effort by our team wrestling without two key guys," Iowa State head coach Kevin Jackson said. "Luke is truly turning the corner. He made a couple of mistakes that put him behind and he still came back and won the match."
Goettl is now 9-7. Maple is 19-1. Goettl nearly pinned Maple early in the match and dominated the third period and overtime.
Freshman Michael Moreno beat No. 14 Matt Lester, 3-2 at 157 pounds.
.
"That was a big win for Mike," Jackson said. "You can see his confidence growing out there."
Beard is still nicked up and Jackson elected not to put him out on the mat. Beard had beaten Erich Schmidtke of Oklahoma, 7-4 in Ames earlier this season. Schmidtke beat Cyclone Tyler Christiensen Friday, 10-1.
"Remember, Boaz was playing baseball last year," Jackson said. "He is still adjusting back to wrestling and the demands it makes on your body."
Iowa State will wrestle at No. 2 Oklahoma State Sunday at 2 p.m.
