The Sooners recorded three wins by fall at 125 pounds, 184 pounds and heavyweight and two technical falls at 157 pounds and 174 pounds to improve to 6-4 on the season and 2-1 against Big 12 opponents.
"I think our team wrestled well,†OU Head Coach Lou Rosselli said. “I think they prepared well. They did all the little things right. They wrestled hard. They did a good job on top trying to get bonus points when we could. We had a couple matches, a couple close ones, but overall, I was very pleased to watch people grow and get better."
Christian Moody got the Sooners off to a hot start with a win by fall in 6:13 over WVU's Devin Brown. Brown led 4-3 entering the final frame, but Moody took him to his back for a takedown and secured the pin to give the Sooners six points to start the dual.
At 141 pounds, Mike Longo recorded a 7-2 decision over Joe Wheeling. Wheeling struck first with a takedown, but Longo countered with a reversal to lock the match at 2-2 after the opening period. Longo registered a reversal to start the second and a 2-point nearfall in the third to give OU a 9-3 advantage.
No. 13 Davion Jeffries secured an 8-6 decision over Christian Monserrat in an exciting 149-pound bout. Monserrat held a 4-2 advantage late in the second frame, but Jeffries got a quick takedown and 4-point nearfall to lead 8-5 at the end of the period. The sophomore held on in the third period for the win.
Redshirt senior and No. 15-ranked Clark Glass dominated the 157-pound match, recording a 19-2 technical fall over Dayton Garrett. Glass struck first with an early takedown and led 5-1 after the opening frame. He tacked on three takedowns, one 4-point nearfall and one 2-point nearfall to end the match in 6:38.
No. 14 Yoanse Mejias downed No. 8 Dylan Cottrell by 8-5 decision at 165 pounds. Mejias struck first with a quick takedown and led 6-2 after the opening frame. Cottrell escaped for the only point of the second period and earned two points off stall warnings in the third, but Mejias held on and scored a takedown at the buzzer.
"I think he (Mejias) wrestled really well,†Rosselli said. “He just has to wrestle a little bit longer to dominate some of those positions so that he doesn't give up any freebees, but overall, I was happy to see him beat a top-ranked guy."
In the 174-pound bout, Matt Reed made quick work of Ty Millward with a 19-0 technical fall in 3:00. Reed scored a quick takedown and never looked back, registering four straight 4-point nearfalls for the bonus-point victory.
Andrew Dixon kept the momentum going in the 184-pound bout with a win by fall in 6:26 over Kyle Rogers. Dixon dominated the match, registering two takedowns, an escape and a stall point to lead 6-1 at the time of the pin.
In the heavyweight bout, redshirt senior Ross Larson recorded his seventh win by fall of the season with a pin in 2:05 over Brandon Ngati to cap off the dual. Larson connected for an early takedown and led 2-0 at the time of the fall.
