"This was a good start for us heading into this weekend," Head coach John Smith said. "This kind of gets me a little more excited after watching them. I am please with the effort."
The bout between Parks and White drew most of the attention going into the evening, as both are capable of earning a spot on the All-America podium at the end of the year.
"I knew it was going to be a tough match. I just had to keep focused," Parks said. "We're both tough competitors, so I mainly had to stay focused and I still have to get better."
The Cowboys' three remaining All-Americans, Clayton Foster, Jordan Oliver and Alan Gelogaev were all bonus-point winners. Foster pinned Colton Hill at the 2:32 mark of their 197-pound bout, Oliver rolled to a very impressive 12-2 major decision victory over highly-regarded freshman Josh Kindig and Gelogaev was a 12-3 major decision winner over Tyson Yoder at 285 pounds.
"I think Jordan Oliver and Josh Kindig was a good match," Smith said. "That Josh Kindig is a tough kid. He is a young kid and a young freshman, but he is tough. He is in on the No. 1 ranked guy in the country's leg three times in the first period, but you've just got to sustain it and he has to learn to finish. I think Oliver getting a major decision over Kindig is a good win for him. Even though he is young, that is a tough kid."
A handful of Cowboy wrestlers were sidelined with nagging injuries, as 125-pounder Ladd Rupp, 141-pounder Luke Silver, 157-pounder Neil Erisman and 197-pounder Blake Rosholt all watched from the sidelines.
Wrestling in front of the home fans for the first time, redshirt freshman 125-pounder Jon Morrison was an 8-3 winner over Tyler Dorrell, 184-pounder Zach White was an 8-3 winner over Darnell Bortz, 157-pounder Stephen Swan was an 11-7 winner over Matt White, Chris Perry was a 12-4 major decision winner over Elliott Hellwege at 184 pounds and 165-pounder Dallas Bailey was a 5-3 winner over Joe Ali.
"I think that when you look at Chris Perry's victory, 12-4 over Elliott Hellwege, that is a good win, that Elliott is tough," Smith said. "That is a good competitive guy and a great leader. Chris Perry picking up a major decision over him is doing something."
The most exciting bout of the evening came at 157 pounds, where Swan and White kept the action going at a frantic pace. Both Cowboys scored a takedown and an escape in the first period, but Swan created some space with an escape and a couple of takedowns
