Purdue earns 21-13 road win at Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Purdue wrestling team opened the Big Ten schedule in strong fashion, earning a 21-13 victory at Northwestern on Friday at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Boilermakers picked up wins in six-of-10 matches, including a trio of major decisions as they improved to 8-1 (1-0 B1G) in duals on the year.

"It's a solid start to our conference schedule," said Purdue head coach Tony Ersland. "Devin Schroder got us off to a great start and it was great to see a couple freshmen go out there and score bonus points where we needed them to."

Schroder's start was an impressive one as the Boilermaker junior was dominant in an 11-2 major decision over seventh-ranked Northwestern rookie Michael DeAugustino. He got out to a 6-0 lead with a takedown and turn in the first and then scored another takedown in the second to stretch things out to a 9-0 edge. DeAugustino got a reversal in the third to cut into the lead, but Schroder escaped and took the riding time point to pick up bonus points in the opener.

Purdue freshman Travis Ford-Melton followed suit at 133 pounds, notching a 14-4 major decision over Dylan Utterback. The Boilermaker rookie racked up six takedowns in the win, improving to 12-5 on the season.

Seniors Nate Limmex and Dylan Lydy picked up decision wins at 149 and 174, and junior Max Lyon took Purdue's lead to 17-10 at 184 pounds in his first match since Dec. 19 with a 7-2 victory over Jack Jessen. Boilermaker freshman Thomas Penola wrapped up the dual with a perfect 8-0 major decision over Jack Heyob at heavyweight, scoring takedowns in the first and second and picking up a reversal in the third to close out the dual.

The Boilermakers return home Sunday to host top-ranked Iowa at Holloway Gymnasium at 4 p.m. ET. The Hawkeyes blanked Indiana on Friday 41-0 in Bloomington to open their conference dual schedule.
