    Purdue dominates NIU Duals

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Purdue wrestling team turned in one of the most dominating performances in school history on Saturday, posting a trio of shutouts at the Northern Illinois Duals at Victor E. Court in Dekalb, Ill. The Boilermakers turned away Loras College, Calumet College of St. Joseph and the hosts, Northern Illinois University by a combined score of 146-0, including 13 bonus point victories.

The Boilermakers opened the day in dominant fashion, using bonus points in nine of 10 matches to roll to a 50-0 victory over the Duhawks. The Old Gold and Black got consecutive pins at 149 and 157 pounds from seniors Ivan Lopouchanski and Tommy Churchard, and then three straight at 174, 184 and 197 from freshman Chad Welch and sophomores Patrick Kissel and Braden Atwood. Junior Camden Eppert scored his first technical fall of the year at 125 pounds, topping Loras freshman Stephen Kettner, 20-5, while sophomores Danny Sabatello and Nick Lawrence and junior Kyle Mosier tallied major decisions at 133, 141 and 165, respectively. Junior heavyweight Alex White had the lone decision of the dual, edging previously undefeated Loras freshman James Buss, 2-0, for his first career victory in a dual.

Calumet College of St. Joseph traveled just three wrestlers to Saturday’s action, two of which failed to pass skin checks, leaving just one individual to compete for the Crimson Wave. Sabatello dispatched of junior Anthony Hawkins at 133 pounds with his team-leading third technical fall of the season, 18-3, for the only match of the dual. The nine forfeits resulted in 54 more team points, finishing the meet at 59-0.

The Boilermakers’ momentum continued in the day’s finale as they swept the host Huskies, 37-0. Eppert and Sabatello got it going with a pair of decisions, but Nelsen made a statement at 141 pounds, needing just 24 seconds to stick Husky freshman Ethan Davis. More decisions followed at 149 and 157 pounds, and sophomore Pat Robinson extended his season record to 8-1 at 165 pounds with a 20-7 major decision. More bonus points came at 184 pounds as Kissel built an 11-2 lead on freshman Bryan Loughlin before sticking him for his second fall of the day at 5:36. Atwood came up just shy of a major decision at 197 pounds, dealing freshman Shawn Scott his first loss of the season, and White closed up the dual with a thrilling 2-1 tie-break victory over Jared Torrence.

The Boilermakers improved to 4-1 in dual competition this season and return to action next Saturday in Troy, N.Y. for the Journeyman Northeast Duals.
