In the first match of the dual at 125 pounds, Ben Thornton overcame an 8-4 deficit in the third period to No. 14 Freddie Rodriguez to force sudden victory and needed just three seconds to score the winning takedown. The 11-9 decision earned the redshirt sophomore his team-leading 18th win of the season as he moved to 18-6 on the season and 5-2 in duals.
Purdue busted open a 14-9 dual thanks to back-to-back pins at 174 and 184 to extend the lead to 26-9. Jacob Morrissey, who made his first dual start since sustaining a season-ending injury at Indiana on Feb. 7, 2016, pinned Jake Residori in 4:21. Tanner Lynde followed and made easy work of Jake Godinez with a 1:46 stick. The fall for Lynde gave him the 10th win of his redshirt senior campaign.
The third pin came in the final bout of the dual at 285. Tyler Kral trailed the reigning Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week, Jake McKiernan, 4-2 heading into the third period. Kral escaped and then in one motion, took the Cougar down and to his back for his first fall of the season at 6:14. The redshirt senior hailing from Crown Point, Indiana, pushed his record to 16-6, including a 6-1 mark in duals.
Alex Griffin also provided bonus points with a 16-1 technical fall in 4:21. The 157-pounder took Karsten Van Velsor down twice in the opening period while also tilting him for a four-point nearfall. Van Velsor opted to take bottom in the second and Griffin took full advantage of the opportunity for more back points, earning a pair of four-counts to end the match. The technical fall was the eighth of the season for Griffin (16-6) and is the most since Jake Patacsil had a dozen in 2009.
The Boilermakers will break for the holidays and return to competition in 10 days at the 54th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships. The iconic, two-day tournament opens on Dec. 29 inside Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Illinois, and concludes on Dec. 30.
