Rookies Cooper Noehre, Macartney Parkinson and Dorian Keys all saw their hands raised Friday, knocking off Northwestern upperclassmen to start their respective careers 1-0. Noehre was fairly dominant in a 10-5 win over Ankhaa Enkhmandakh, wrestling up at 165 pounds, while Parkinson came from behind with an impressive top game to upend No. 22 Jack Jessen at 184 pounds 9-4. Keys finished off the newcomer parade with an 8-1 decision at heavyweight to cap off the win.
Parkinson trailed Jessen 4-1 after the first period, but went to work on top in the second, securing a cradle for four swipes and then two more as time expired with another turn. Parkinson then took top position in the final period and extended his ride and tacked on one stalling point and a riding-time point on his way to the win.
The four ranked Boilermakers to take the mat Friday all came away victorious, led by dominant technical falls from No. 3 senior Devin Schroder at 125 pounds and No. 18 sophomore Thomas Penola at 197. Schroder got on top early and worked his turns, running up a 10-0 lead after the first and then adding a takedown and turn to seal up the win in the second. Penola put on a takedown clinic, scoring early and often on his way to a 21-6 victory in the third period.
No. 5 sophomore Kendall Coleman posted a takedown in the second period on his way to a 4-3 decision over Maxx Mayfield at 157, while No. 25 Emil Soehnlen had a takedown in the third to earn a 3-1 win over Troy Fisher at 174. Purdue's eighth and final win on the ledger was a 6-5 decision for junior Bjorn Schroeder at 141 pounds over Frankie Tal Shahar, Schroeder's first career dual victory.
Both sides were without several starters Friday, but Northwestern's ranked starters at 133 and 149 pounds came away with major decisions.
The Boilermakers return to action in one week, traveling to Illinois to start a weekend doubleheader. Purdue will also head north to Wisconsin to face the Badgers on Sunday.
