THE STORT STORY
Kyle Snyder, who wrestled for Good Counsel from 2010-13 and went 179-0, didn't disappoint in his homecoming, piling up nine takedown and a four-point near fall to defeat Maryland's Youssif Hemida by technical fall, 22-7. Not to be outdone, sophomore Myles Martin redshirt junior Nathan Tomasello and redshirt freshman Kollin Moore also provided key bonus points as Ohio State won eight of nine matches.
TOMASELLO, PLETCHER GET IT STARTED
Ohio State forfeited at 125 pounds, but Tomasello, who this week took over the No. 1 spot nationally at 133 lbs., stayed perfect on the year at 10-0 with a 15-5 major decision of Billy Rappo. It was Tomasello's sixth bonus point victory and fourth by major decision. True freshman Luke Pletcher (20-2) then gave Ohio State a 8-6 lead in the dual as he easily dispatched Jhared Simmons at 141 by major decision, 16-7. Pletcher turned up the heat on Simmons in the third period, taking him down three times while also accumulating well over 1:00 of riding time to secure the major decision bonus point.
RYAN, BURCHER, KRESEVIC EARN CLOSE WINS
Maryland took it final lead of the dual with a pin at 149 lbs., but Jake Ryan (10-7) seized the momentum back with a 3-2 decision at 157 lbs. over Justin Alexander. Ryan scored the only takedown of the match at the 2:15 mark of the opening period. An escape by Alexander at the beginning of the second period tied it at 2-2, but Ryan countered with an escape to open the third and successfully fended off Alexander's attacks as time expired.
At 165, Cody Burcher (14-7) scored a workman-like 5-2 decision over Patrick Gerish on the strength of two first-period takedowns and an escape to begin the second period. His win gave Ohio State a 14-12 lead in the dual, an advantage it would not relinquish.
Redshirt senior Justin Kresevic (8-3) picked up his second dual win of the season by scoring a takedown against Josh Ugalde at 174 lbs. with just 1:15 remaining in the third period to break a 1-1 tie. That win pushed the Buckeyes lead to 17-12.
MARTIN, MOORE, SNYDER SCORE BONUS POINTS
Martin, wrestling less than an hour from his high school (McDonogh School in Owing Mills, Md.) won his 20th match of the year by taking down Sam Rowell seven times in a 16-6 major decision. For Martin, it was his team-leading seventh major decision and 15th bonus point victory. Moore (19-2) followed with a major decision of his own, topping David-Brian Whisler 17-7. Moore had three first-period takedowns to build a quick 6-2 advantage.
In the main event of the afternoon, Snyder (6-0) took Yousiff down seven times in the first two periods and twice more in the third before tilting him on his back to get four near-fall point that clinched the technical fall. Snyder has won all six of his bouts this year by bonus points (four fall, one major decision, one technical fall).
