Michigan State wraps up dual season with win over CMU

EAST LANSING, MICH. -- For the first time since the 2002-03 season, the Michigan State wrestling team will finish with a record above .500 following a 24-15 victory over Central Michigan on Friday, February 22. It was the Spartans first win over the Chippewas since the 2013-14 season when MSU defeated CMU by a final score of 18-14.

Michigan State concludes its dual meet season with a record of 10-8 as they begin preparing for the Big Ten Championships in Minneapolis, Minn. on March 9-10.

Matching up for the third time in their young careers, No. 7-ranked Rayvon Foley faced Drew Hildebrandt at 125 pounds to kick-off the dual. A tight-knit contest came down to a sudden victory period where Hildebrandt earned his second takedown of the bout. A first period locked-hands penalty came back to bite Foley who picked up two reversals and had the riding time advantage.

Redshirt senior Anthony Tutolo was the first of three seniors to pick up a victory on senior night Friday with a 7-2 decision over Deven Perez. Tutolo's win tied the dual at 3-3 after he earned three takedowns.

Austin Eicher continued the trend of senior victories at 141 pounds earning a first period takedown and a second period escape in addition to riding time to defeat Drew Marten by a 4-1 decision.

At 157 pounds, redshirt sophomore Jake Tucker used a takedown with two seconds left in the match to defeat Logan Parks, 5-3. Tucker is now 21-13 on the year and closes dual competition with an 8-9 record.

Logan Ritchie was the final senior to pick up a win on Friday, appearing in the Spartan lineup for the first time since a February 8 win over Northwestern. After a scoreless first period, Ritchie earned an escape and a takedown in the second en route to a 4-1 victory over Bret Fedewa.

Redshirt sophomore Drew Hughes found himself in an advantageous position early on in the 174 pound bout, taking down Collin Lieber in 14 seconds. Hughes didn't waste any time getting to his tilts as he pinned Lieber in 1:07.

Central Michigan pulled off their second upset of the evening at 184 pounds with Jordan Atienza defeating No. 19-Cameron Caffey by an 8-5 decision.

Redshirt freshman Brad Wilton secured the dual for Michigan State at 197 pounds by pinning his opponent, Landon Pelham, in just fifteen seconds.

Rounding out the night was redshirt freshman Chase Beard, who was pinned by NCAA Division I fall leader Matt Stencel in 1:34.
